First lens: Zoom or Prime?

What would you guys say? I know that Nikkor 50mm 1.8 is a really great price for starters...If I got that lens, what would be a good zoom to get in addition to it?

I really like the Sigma 24-70 as the zoom. It's crisp and fast. I bought the Tamron 28-75 which is still a good lens but I would have preferred the 24-70.

All depends on your budget and if you plan to add a full frame body in the future.

Canon 18-55 used for $50 to $100 is a good place to start on Ebay. Manual focus lenses are great, but slower to work with if you are just at the beginning level. If you are going Nikon 50mm I would start with a 1.4 because they are also a good price and a stop faster. What ever level you are, a faster lens will be very useful.

I agree that if you are looking at the Nikon 50 1.8 you might as well get the 50 1.4.

What is you lens budget? Will you be shooting in low light or will you be able to light your scene?

The great thing about zooms are that you can work faster because you can just reframe the shot with the zoom instead of physically moving the camera back and forth. One of the negatives with zooms is that they are generally slower, f/2.8 and slower. If you are shooting outdoors or can light the scene f/2.8 is usually fine, but if you are shooting in low light f/2.8 will possibly not be fast enough, just depending on how dark it is.

Almost all of my lenses are older manual focus lenses. For zooms I have a Vivitar Series 1 28-105 f/2.8-3.8 and a Vivitar Series 1 70-210 f/3.5. I spent less than $150 for the two lenses combined and they are a dream to focus with.

I've read the 1.4 Nikon to be very very soft wide open, and stopping it down to at least 1.8 makes it useable, so you may as well save some cash and buy the 1.8 to begin with. I shot a lot of stuff on primes before getting a zoom (Tamron 17-50 2.8), and whenever there is more time to set up then I'd always go for primes. All depends on what you are shooting though, lens choice is subjective
