This is what I suggested in another thread (a couple of days ago) for a possible workaround. We were mainly discussing the lack of a cinematic blur (or something like that). But I hope one day someone can do a controlled test with a film camera vs a video cam and compare the blur at different shutter speeds (on the video cam) to try and see where thy will match the best. It might be different for every cam...but it will still provide some good information.I shot film for many years before I owned a video camera, and the first 24p camera I used was the DVX - I handhold, am seldom on a tripod, and personally like a moving camera..
For some reason (I'm not a techy) the 24 on that camera looked fine, but when I got the HPX500, 24p strobed noticeably, and was commented on several times by other people. I finally ended up (at the suggestion of someone on this forum) using a 220 degree shutter setting for most of my work. There are downsides, but the strobing is pretty much gone - don't know how that relates to this camera.
Today I unboxed the AF100 and fired it up for the first time. Pretty cool, but at the moment there are some serious drawbacks that could be dealbreakers for this camera on higher-end productions.
#1. Strobing. No, it's not because I'm panning too fast, I understand that phenomenon. My RED doesn't do it, my EX-1 doesn't do it, and my Arri 435 doesn't do it. At 24fps with 180-degree shutter, there is an unacceptable amount of strobing. Searched the forums, and still haven't found a solution.
#2. Image delay in monitors. The on-board monitor and the SDI-out have a delay. It's noiceable enough that pulling focus from the moniotr is affected, and I'd hate to deal with any lighting/acting cues. Once again, I searched but didn't find anything. Thoughts?
Thanks in advance, Max

It's always amazing when someone points out something that is so obvious in terms of visual artifacts, and so-called experts shoot it down with their "sweep it under the rug" answers. Is it fan boy lust? It really is detrimental to the credibility of the information gleened from these forums. I pointed out a similar issue with the HVX many moons ago, and got the same old "it's the same with film" answer, or "you're panning too fast". No. No. No. It's not the same as properly telecined film. There is as issue. The solution may lie in the way it is ultimately posted, but there is an in camera issue with "strobing". Even though I don't own an AF100, I know exactly what he is talking about. Max if you happen to be reading this, it's me Hal. I rent from Max on occasion, and can vouch that he knows what he is talking about. I'm interested in a solution to this problem as well, because it sucks, and again, it is real.
Oh yeah, Max, I finally quit that dump I worked for for many years, today was my last day.
I might be mistaken, but is there also a slight lag in the audio output to the headphone jack? Maybe there's some internal processing delay that affects all of the outputs.

What were the drawbacks you encountered?

Sorry it looks so compressed, but is this what folks are seeing in the strobe issue ?
