First HMC40 Video

Looks great! But frankly, any modern consumer camcorder could produce such nice results. More important what you've shot and how you've shot it. Great editing and you sure had lots of fun! Envy! :-)

What are you basing this on?

Single CMOS Canons, for example, do not produce this type of footage. Not even close.

In fact, having owned a 200, 170, 150, and tested a 300, and having used many consumer AVCHD cams including three Canons, three Panasonics, and two Sonys, the 40 produces markedly better footage than any of the consumer brands I noted.

The footage also grades exceedingly well when converted to pro res.

I don't know... just on what I see around. I myself have the HDC-SD1, HDC-SD100, HDR-HC1 (which I am selling now). I used to have the HV30 and the HF100. The latter one I particularly liked.

Maybe I don't know where to look. But overall image, dynamic range, colors, sharpness, codec quality, etc. looks on par with modern consumer cams to me. I am sure that more differences could be found on a big screen when watching original MTS files, but watching a web clip I don't notice dramatic differences.

What is your criteria for "markedly better"?

I don't know... Canon's Cinemode grades quite well.

From what I've shot, captured, and edited. The footage from the 40 looks "much better" than anything we shot from the Canons, Panasonics, and Sonys. Obviously this is subjective, but on our case, both me and my partner said "wow."

The HMC40 produces markedly better looking footage than the six consumer single chip AVCHD cams we have used or owned on the last two years.

Good made.

In the sky I see occasionally the same behavior as the I know it from my (European) HDC-SD300:

- White areas (not clouds) moving around the blue sky. I think it is very important not to overexpose the lights (sky) with the 3mos systems.

- One time a tendency to show the sky cyan-green colored can be seen. The SD300 is doing this very obviously when automatic white balance is used. So I use manual white balance only now. Even than a color correction of the sky is needed many times. Have you done a color correction of your HMC40 footage too and/or have you used a manual white balance setting?

I have done no color correction and the white balance was set manually.
Thank you for the information.

If you still have the HMC40 - Is it possible to avoid the white areas in the blue sky completely with one or more of the functions KNEE, GAMMA, A-IRIS LEVEL?
