First camera T3i or T2i? Long..

First of all sorry if this is the wrong section, I couldn't find a beginners room!

Over here the price difference between the T3i and the T2i are minimal (-10%). I was all set to go with the T3i and Magic Lantern until I saw it lacked some of audio features of the T2i. Now I'm confused.

I'm a musician and most of footage I hope to shoot will be interviews of other musicians, acoustic performances, quick interviews at events for online content etc. The audio solution in my case will at most consist of a Rode Videomic Pro. I don't want to carry an external recorder and sync later due to the kind of situations I'll be in. It's a one man band affair right now so top mount Rode will have to work.

Chad in Canon Audio thread appears to be happy the Rode Videomic Pro into a T2i but most of his vids have the camera gain at 0. Seems you can't bypass the T3i preamps so there is always going to be an element of noise there. How much isn't clear yet. A few people seem to be happy using a bit of camera gain.

What's the consensus here? How much noise will I end up with if I use a Videomic Pro at +20db?

The T3i is obviously a newer camera and the articulating screen is great but is it realistic to eventually expect the same audio functionality as the other models, bypass preamps, audio monitoring etc?

Do we know if anyone is working the T3i audio chip or if it is possible or realistic?

Are there many people asking for these features or is it just me?

Thanks in advance!

Do you want to record great audio with video you need an external recorder. Videomic pro will sound better, but still sound like crap ESPECIALLY if your job is to capture audio. Buy a field recorder and hook it up to the board where the artists mic feed goes too. If not just place the field recorder close to the talent and record. Synching in post takes less than a minute.... If you ever worked on a Music video or anything similar than you synch all of the time.

If you want to be good at your profession you have to do it the correct way, if not then why even come here and make a thread?

You will not be able to record "great" sound with the T2i regardless of Magic Lantern. Will it be acceptable? Yes, but if you want ACTUAL good sound with a T2i you will need to record separately. That's not to say the Rode Videomic Pro isn't a good shotgun mic, but for what you want separate audio would be a must IMO.

Last thing, I recommend the T2i. Only stable ML port available.

Thanks for the reply. I'm not really looking to do full on music videos or concerts. Most of the work I do as musician involves playing acoustic guitar with pop singers, about half the time the videographers are using some kind of top mount mic. Nothing that will involve amplified sound, is the Videomic pro not up for the task? Is there an alternative that is similar dimensions?

For spontaneous interview type things pulling out an external sound recorder as well as an DSLR isn't really appropriate!

Thanks. Would the Videomic pro work for interviews/spoken pieces where the subject is directly infront?

Ya, you want to mic people for interviews NOT use an on-camera mic. Budget for the external recording device.

Yeah take audio out of the equation- if you care about audio starting reading about Zoom audio recorders. That said you also definitely want the T3i- the swing out LCD monitor is a game changer. With it- any conceivable shot or angle can be reasonably comfortably operated. Without it you will need to either buy a second monitor or start really boning up on your yoga flexibility.

Go for the T3i...and you ll also have that really cool 3x crop as a bonus!
Only for that, I ended up using the 600D more than I use the 60D...
