FS7: Firmware V3.0 Released? [Interval Recording, Focus Magnification area position+more]

Because that's how they sell "new" product by adding features to existing hardware. I'm not saying they aren't useful updates to you as well but there's a difference in the business model of Red and Sony. Both are great and have their place but they are vastly different.

Pretty sure I addressed your question why *I* believe they add new features to existing / old hardware for years after release: because it's YEARS between hardware releases. Believe it or not, Red is in it to make money - like every other company so they're not releasing new updates / features for existing owners. They're doing it to entice new purchases or to bolster sales in their proprietary media / power solutions, etc.

Not a thing in the world wrong with that. Everyone does what they do, including us lowly end users, to make money. I'm just not fan boy to any manufacturer. They're tools and I have to choose what serves my needs for my business so I can make money too. I went from Panasonic to Canon and now to Sony. The next camera system may very well be Red and I'll scoop up every additional "bonus" feature they want to add but I'll know full well that "upgrade" wasn't intended for me - it won't stop me from using it :)

Red continue to release new free firmware with new features and colour science for Epic and Scarlet 4 years after their release.

For sure, I agree with you. But up until the recently announced Raven, Red has been in a different category of camera.

My point was the question was 'which company does this'. Red does, because their business model puts much greater reliance on their relationships with end users. There were still firmware updates for Red One last year., a camera from 2008 that uses other media. What is their financial incentive for that? The only real incentive I can see is to make people believe they will be looked after.

I abhor the the use of the term fanboy. It cheapens conversation in my eyes. I'll go with whatever is best or whatever I can turn a profit on. I hate Apple's cult but they make the best laptops so I have one. I hate Sony's customer service but I have an FS7. I'll buy a Red again if it makes sense to. But free updates is one of the things they most certainly get right.

I've been very pleased with all the frequent updates from RED over the 4.5 years I owned one. Some times it felt like a new camera, the updates where that big. Obviously a lot was missing in the start ;-)
Never been to impressed with Sony updates, but it looks like 3.0 could deliver the goods.
I'm still not convinced all the bugs will be sorted out though

I really couldn't care less about new features when stuff like the shutter bug is allowed to exist on a camera in 2015.

Agreed. And the audio knob delay is also amazing that still exists a year after the camera is released

I'd be happy if they got rid of the bass cut filter on the mic preamp DSP programming. But I realize this is probably put there intentionally to delineate this consumer line from their professional line, Cine Alta, the latter of which have superb mic preamps with flat response from 20-20,000Hz.

Sony says it's coming late this year.
We just don't know more.
I check that Sony firmware microsite everyday so I'll update it here when it will be released. I guess it will come together with x500 formware in October or if not on some random day till the end of 2015. Who knows, maybe on last day of December ;)

I wish Sony would make center crop button assignable or at least bush button-confirm. That would make a useful feature extremely useful. Im not optimistic as Sony doesn't miss an opportunity to underwhelm.

The dealer who I bought by FS7 from claimed he was told the firmware was slated for the first week in Oct clearly that turned out to be a bum steer.

On the other hand if that means few more weeks of development, eliminating more bugs and doing more testing then by all means I'm happy to wait longer.
