FS7: Firmware V3.0 Released? [Interval Recording, Focus Magnification area position+more]

It was announced for October! Then secretly and without making a statement on it, they changed the dates on their website. It isn't a matter of patience. It's a matter of being fed a line of bullshit that changes every couple of weeks.

Patience... it's going to happen but maybe just a few weeks beyond what was originally said. You could always be waiting for an Ursa 4.6K which was advertised for July-August and now is still in beta.

If you buy a Blackmagic camera you get everything you deserve as far as I'm concerned.

Because I can't shoot over 60 fps in 4K. As I said in my previous post, I use center crop for HFR at 180fps and 240 fps, which I use constantly for wildlife and sports.
Center crop turns my Canon 200-400 f/4 with built-in 1.4x extender into a beautiful 1120mm f/5.6 lens.

Oh, that's a different situation entirely. So the center crop is going to solve the aliasing and moire problems and that's why it's a useful feature. Got it. Hadn't thought of that because I don't use much HFR video.

No, I never said anything about solving aliasing or moire problems so don't put words in my mouth that I didn't say. In my opinion, those problems don't even really exist on the FS7 or F55 except in some very, very rare instances that are almost impossible to create even when I wanted to for testing. The benefit of the center crop function is simply to double the the perceived focal length of a lens. Period. Nothing more.

I figured the real benefit of center crop would be the elimination of pixel binning and the attendant aliasing. I've managed to mostly avoid it by using the shallow DoF to keep objects like fences and shingle rooftops out of focus to avoid aliasing from repeating patterns. It is a problem, thought not nearly as bad as early DSLR video recording. The aliasing itself is not difficult to reveal. Just shoot a brick wall, or distant buildings with large numbers of evenly spaced features, such as windows and peak the focus and aliasing will jump right out. There have been times would I would have liked to see less aliasing in HFR mode. Maybe we'll get that with center crop.

Mark, I'd like to see you post some footage that actually shows that problem. An A vs. B test between full-frame and cropped on the same shot with the only difference being the focal length of the lens. For example, full-frame at 100mm and center crop @ 50mm. Please show us the difference with footage and subject matter that would actually be good enough that it might be used in a real production and not just some junk that no professional would ever shoot. I look forward to seeing it.

The FS7 is not yet capable of making such a comparison until the 3.0 firmware, so your request is not possible to fulfill at this time.

I never thought the aliasing issues with HFR were up for debate, but already reported by numerous shooters. The term "pixel binning" comes up a lot in those discussions.

Some explanations I've read are that the OLPF is designed for 4K, but in HFR mode, the filter is less effective and the aliasing is present. It's not a problem when repeating patterns (ie., parallel lines such as picket fences, brick buildings, etc). I noticed it with chainlink fences that surround the tennis courts where I shot some HFR during tennis matches. It's definitely there and care must be taken to control DoF to keep patterns out of focus.

When FW 3 is available, I will be curious to conduct experiments in HFR mode with crop and full frame modes.

That's what the last few pages of this thread have been about.

I checked the last couple of pages and found nothing about it. Lots of Sony hate though. Thought you guys was just impatient so i posted it thinking now you are really getting pissed :Drogar-Happy(DBG):

Oh well, cant win every time!

Post #72. Hate doesn't come from nothing ;) I think Sony took some lesson from BM for the latest firmware update :P
