FIRMWARE is HERE

All in all very glad I bought when I did, only had to wait three weeks for this.
Sorry to inform you we have all a new camera :-) It is the third generation as matter of fact. The 2nd one came last June ;-) Nobody will again state that a firmware won't add new features, new models do.

Does the Firmware only DL onto a PC?

Does the Firmware only DL onto a PC?

I have DL the firmware 2 times and normally my Mac just opens the file. I notice that you can choose which OS you want to DL the software for and It doesn't have an option for Mac. I should say it has the option in the drop down menu but when you pick the mac option the firmware is not available.

I must be doing something wrong, anyone else having this problem?

The only thing that I have received is a PDF file that instructs you how to install the firmware.

Scroll down to the very bottom of that PDF, click agree and have fun with your new 24p camera. Oh and the next screen will give you the MAC option which is a dmg file, then have fun with your.... yada yada yada.

Last June, there was the introduction of manual exposure control, now, the frame rates standards. This is something new. In the past, we were used to only see the introduction of new features with new models, today, they're coming with firmware updates. There's a new policy in the air as consequence of a new player in the field, Jim Jannard.

With people like George Lucas and Network TV pushing Canon there's a chance that we might see another update with RAW HDMI out. If not the 5DMKIII should be pretty incredible. As it stands now after shooting 3 films last week @ 25p I'm satisfied with the results and would be confident shooting a feature with the MKII. I would like to see Canon match the D3s in low light capability and film grain like noise in the MKIII. The Nikon D700 replacement isn't far away, Canon has to stay on it's toes as does RED.

I screened a short I recently shot to a Director who just shot a feature with 2 REDs, I think he was a little shocked with the results I got with the MKII, and that was @ 30p. He said something along the lines of "It proves you can get very good results with a very small budget".

I have exactly the same opinion with no extra commas ;-)

Does this end the debate between the 7D and the 5DMKII?

Setting aside the price difference, would everyone agree the 5DMKII is the DSLR to get for HD video?
I've been leaning toward the 7D, but it seems now that the 24p and audio monitoring issues have
been solved it's a no-brainer.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

The 7D can do slo-mo but the 5D produces a better picture. You also have to consider the cost of a tokina 11-16mm lens to cover the wide end with the 7D.

So....Does the firmware allow you to use an external monitor in HD while filming. If it does I will own a 5d by this time next week:-)

Nope, that's how Canon implemented the audio controls. Sucks, but looks like the new Magic Lantern firmware will fix it soon enough.
