Finally saw GH2 footage first hand.. I am not upgrading. Staying with GH1.3

I wasn't trying to put it into a context that the AF-100 codec was 'shameful,' but he definitely laid it out that he was 'limited' to shooting with it and it was really wanting to see the quality of the camera with a better codec. "Fine" is not the greatest word to describe something... it's saying... "adequate" at best.
If it had a crazy good encoder, its price would have been higher. Ninja seems promising. But why become early adopter? Wait and see. If time is ripen, get it at cheaper price. The best time to get GH1 was when GH13 project was in high gear around this spring. The price was below $1200. Never say never :)

Speaking about never say never...

We never know when the States will have European style VAT on every consumable goods... 20%, 30% tax in near future. Let's enjoy cheap goods... for now.

Ummm.. its price IS a lot higher. GH2 = $1000 AF-100 = $5000. Ummm sounds like that should include a "crazy good encoder" to me.

Don't know about "crazy good", but the encoder in AF100 is certainly better. It has at least one additional encoder feature (CABAC) that the one in GH2 lacks. Make that two features (B frames + CABAC) over GH1. Where GH13 lacks the technical sophistication of newer models it can make up with raw [bitrate] power. We've got choices (some of them from unexpected quarters) and that's good!

Personally, I'm quite happy with my GH13. There is nothing in GH2 that makes me want to get one immediately. What I do want is for VK to get his hands on a copy ASAP. So I've recently donated and I welcome others to donate or help in any other way. Because if he does to manage to liberate this constrained soul of a machine then watch out, GV2 is gonna kick some serious a$$.

I completely forgot about the donation. I did very little... Hehe. Hopefully free GH2 excites him to do some magic. But... don't we need at least one firmware to begin with? There is no solid deadline for future Panny lenses such as 25mm 1.4 and brighter zooms. When Panny releases a new firmware, if GH2 is hackable, given enough time to stabilize settings, GH2 is likely to be a lot cheaper...
Public firmware release is one, but not the only method.

SSD is pretty stable. Why not make AF series to have a detachable SSD compartment? Then encode with 1:6 compression ratio in user picked format such as prores or avchd. Detach the compartment and connect via USB2 or Firewire. Voila!

Future model can have a raid 1 with 2 * SSD in one compartment. Automatic backup!

SSD's biggest myth... 100000 write cycle... who cares? Intel is planning to release 3rd generation next Spring. I would love built-in SSD integration feature.

Yeah I am thinking of going some route like that with the af-100, and keeping my GH13s as b and c cams. I bet you won't even known one from the other in the final edit.

Blackout, have you posted footage backing up your experience? Not questioning what you saw, but just getting to this thread and seeing 26 pages worth of posts. I'm not sure if I missed any footage posted backing your statements up. And I'm not talking about other people's stuff floating on vimeo. Speaking loudly about your experience is one thing, but a disclaimer needs to be put out there that your mileage may vary from mine. What is unacceptable to one person might be passable to another. I mention this for those on the fence and to make the point that when buying a camera it is best to do your own testing and not just make purchase decisions based on 26 pages of comments. Anyway, I urge everyone to keep an open mind until more footage is available that properly tests this camera.

I back this point completely. It is not as if the gh2 is a pre production camera where we might understand that footage should not be posted. It is already a launched camera which is widely available in Japan and anybody can buy one on ebay if he wants, as some have already done. So as we say, the proof is in the pudding, show us the footage to back your point. I am not saying that you are wrong, but please 26 page of speculation I think is becoming a bit long in the tooth.

Way back on page 1 Blackout explained that he saw footage here in the US, and was not able to take it with him. He expressed his opinion in a way that generated - ahem - interest. I think its fine that he called it as he saw it - I also totally agree that a YMMV disclaimer is appropriate. For one thing, Blackout has very picky needs for huge screen distribution, which many of us don't.

Right GrahamH. What Blackout did provide was some sample footage from his GH1(3) that looked great. I'm hoping the GH-2 can provide the same quality footage. But from "some"...not all...of the videos I've been seeing from the GH-2 it is still a toss-up for me. If the GH-2 ever gets hacked...then fuggedaboudit!!

plus its not just "speculation" when there is a widely available selection of downloadable raw clips that show the issues with the GH2's codec....I too personally have been underwhelmed by nearly all clips ive seen thus far.

Folks are just as eager to defend the GH2 like the "second coming" also.
Some should keep a open mind that the GH2 might not be as great as it "could" be....not yet anyways! :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

Yes, but when all I see are tests of people shooting dark corners of rooms, or waving the camera back and forth like a madman, things that still give my GH13 issues I hold my judgment for stuff shot by doers and not obsessive compulsive pixel peepers. :) Just saying, people need to keep a level head about this stuff. Not sure who said this was the second coming, that's just exaggeration.

I know I've hit that point where I pretty universally don't care about or love any cameras, I'm just concerned if it does what I need it to do under my normal shooting conditions. What people do in the privacy of their dark unlit rooms is not my concern. :)
