Finally received the HVX! A few questions...

It's here!

Much to my enjoyment, I finally came home today to a beautiful box filled with packing peanuts and a nice, new Panasonic AG-HVX200P (was a little confused about the "P" part since I've only heard it referred to as the HVX200, but doesn't seem to be any different, so it's all good.)

Slowly I removed the box from its bed of peanuts, and using my keys, cut through the pristine packing tape. I held my breath in excitement, and opened the box...

Woo! Another box!...and it looked the exact same!...well alrighty!

(Repeated the whole "box opening" procedure...)

Finally got to the camera, and needless to say, it's quite cool, and I'm very pleased. I have a few questions/comments which I'd like to share with the community:

1) The LCD seems a bit...blurry? I dunno how to describe it, but for example when i press the "bars" button to display the video bar signal, the colors bleed a bit, and the menu text seems to do the same. It's still readable, no doubt, just doesn't feel that "crisp". Is this something common or should I look into setting up a replacement or fix or whatever?

2) I haven't filmed anything yet, just held and played around with it for 20-30 minutes or so, but I am relieved to find it's not nearly as heavy or massive as I initially thought it might be based on previous postings. This might have something to do with the fact I'm 6'3", but still, I'd say it's definitely usable in handheld form.

Very cool camera overall. I have ALOT to learn, as there are so many buttons and settings. But I'm greatly looking forward to this. :)

I'll post my first footage once I take some. Thanks to everyone with DVXuser for the continued assistance and help with everything!

congrats on your new camera.

Yes the LCD seems pretty low quality, It almost looks like a bad composite connection :-(
You'll get used to it...the focus assist rock.
(You have enabled 'EVF detail' on the back of the cam right?)

I have read previous reports of a blurry or not clear screens before I got my HVX200 and was concerned about this. Since receiving my camera I have to say that the screen I see is not blurry and the bar colors do not bleed. Yes the lcd is low res but i can clearly make out text and bars with no complaints. Just for your sake I would compare your screen with at least 2 other cameras, if you can, to see if there is a difference.

I received today my HVX200 and the first thing I saw was the LCD quality, the DVX100 LCD is sharper and colors look more natural.
Viewfinder is OK, I love it in B&W :)

Any setting to improve LCD quality ?

Thanks,
Ulisses

Make sure you press the EVF detail button for the lcd - it does a sharpening that is a night and day difference.

agree with the above. I like to set my EVF for black and white, and because it has a higher resolution you can judge focusing better.

I was concerned about lo rez LCD the 1st time I fired up my HVX but it either improved or I got used to it.

I kind of believe it "improved" from the fact it had some power running through the circuits etc. (Do not know even if this is possible ).

I had a similar experience with the SLR viewfinder on my Nikon D70s still camera.

I opened HVX200 and DVX100a LCDs side by side and DVX100a is a lot sharper, but I liked the safe area mark and underscan.
The DVX100a LCD is great.
The JVC HD100 is one of the worst LCD I saw in a camera, maybe Canon XL1 is worst :), but the HVX200 LCD isn't what I was expecting from Pana.

Our Sony Z1U had a beautiful, sharp LCD.

With focus an issue on the HD cams, I'm surprised the LCD isn't better

I find my LCD screen flickers rapidly at a just-visible speed - so I guess it's less than about 20Hz - when first turned on, which could account for the blurry appearance. Tends to calm down when it's warmed up. But I'm with others who suspect the LCD screen is one place Panasonic economised on parts.

so what does the P stand for. Has that been determined. I read somewhere it menat PAL but once I turned the camera on and went to the settings and saw 60i and 24P and 30P I felt better. Plus the instruction book had NTSC on the front. Quite confusing
