WriterDuet has become free (actually donate what you want to pay), and has a new offline, non-cloud based version of their software you can use on your desktop or Android/iOS device called WriterSolo. Played around with it and it seems on par with Final Draft, and even offers some features Final Draft doesn't. Hit the W in the bottom left hand corner to see the download link.

I have never used this app, but I read the reviews on Apple’s App Store for iOS devices and the reviews are terrible.

Now, maybe other versions are fantastic, but I’m looking for screenplay writing apps for my iPad, so too bad. The FD app for iOS is atrocious, and I’ve tried a few others, but so far no luck. I thought this might be it, but I guess the search continues. YMMV.

I’m not sure what he’s talking about. I use the app on my phone but when online just go to writerduet.com and log in, use as intended. If youre paranoid about losing your stuff, you can save a project file to your hd. Have not bothered with the desktop app...always been online when using it on a laptop or imac. The ios app is certainly not terrible but the features may be limited (I havent found a way to do certain things) compared to the desktop or cloud version. But you can start a scriptbon your ipad/iphone, let it sync when youre actually online, and continue on your computer, fixing the things it wouldnt let you do on the phone.

So far its been a great program, all kinds of features I havent touched yet.

Even for $200 (original lifetime license price) I dont know if theres anything better. I had a discount code when I got mine, but it used to be that it was free for 3 scripts (and possibly a limited feature set).

There have been a number of free screenwriting programs in the past. Most of them have been slightly crippled in order to sell a fully featured version.

So did I. Also bought a lifetime license for my writing partner as well. Admittedly, this free version is more limited than the paid.

My two cents:

In my experience, WriterDuet is a high value tool for working professionals who write screenplays in collaboration. My writing partner and I live in different cities and we can co-write and revise in real time while we chat. Incredibly efficient when on a tight deadline or in the moments before handing in a draft to producers. I've tried Fade In and others but only WriterDuet does what WriterDuet does.

The developer - Guy - is also super responsive. I had a versioning issue the day before a deadline. I spoke with him by phone that morning and he coded a fix and sent it out that afternoon. A very talented engineer.

I've used it for two jobs that lasted about a year each. Through various drafts, it proved reliable and robust. Admittedly, I backup drafts at the end of every workday like a paranoid manic. Unnecessary but it helps me sleep better.

I do not use it for non-collaboration projects and when collaborating, I hold off on importing a screenplay as long as possible. This is because I strongly prefer the barebones simplicity of plaintext for story development and drafting. I draft in Fountain syntax. I use Scrivener as an IWE (Integrated Writing Environment) and set up a custom compile for Highland 2 to burn the draft. Then I'll import the Fountain into WriterDuet.

Not the workflow for everyone, but it works for me.
