Final Print - The Entry that could

So sorry to here about the setback. I know it has been said before, but I have gone through what you are going through now, except a client and a contract were hanging in the balance with a deposit already spent and deadlines looming. I had no choice, but I am glad that I stuck with it because I made it through better than I think I would've before the lost data. Let this fuel your story not hinder it. You may have to improvise and cut corners or simplify, but the very act of recovering and competing, regardless of the outcome is very valuable to you as a person and as a filmmaker.

Most of my successes in life were after a hardship or trying time or situation. One of my favorite quotes is:

"When you get into a tight place and everything goes against you until it seems you cannot hold on for one minute longer, never give up then, for that is just the place and time that the tide will turn."

Harriet Beecher Stowe

I know it may come of a little SELF HELPish.... but I tell you... a positive mind-frame and a tenacity that goes against reason has gotten me through a lot and I think that you should not let this deter you. Sure it is not convenient, but it is just a stumbling block and you will always have stumbling blocks. Let it fuel you not break you.

This has been yourr SELF-HELP moment with Mark.... Join us next week where we will be discussing...

oh uh ... sarcasm...

SERIUOSLY THOUGH... don't give up!!! Good luck dude. I look forward to your submission!

Charli, Keystoned, Bosindy, DJ, Mark, I really appreciate it. It was tough to bounce back, but we've got a working script again and it'll probably be the same as last time. dvxusers are always so cool about stuff, you guys rock.

What happened to the old drive? Did they destroy it or something? Is there any way to get it back?

The dialogue as I was handing it in to the Apple store dude:
Me: So, can I have my old hard drive back
Dude with more piercings on his face than many people have on their entire body: No.
Me: Well, why not? That doesn't seem exactly reasonable.
Dude: I don't know. I think it's Apple store policy. I just work here, I don't know everything. Jeez.

Me: ESAD.

Well, come June 1st, 12:02 AM, this short will be officially dead,

buried under the likes of Level 4, Berlin, Spies Girls.

On the other hand, I'm backing my film 100%

How's it coming? any progress towards getting a final print? :)

Yeah, we're doing lighting tests for the Z1 tomorrow (I'm new to the cam), and we have all our actors pretty rock solid.

I'll be doing storyboards tomorrow, but I hate to post anything because I'll give it away.

How'd the lighting tests go? Any chance of posting a frame grab or two? Really looking forward to seeing all the different cameras that are entering the 'fest this time around!

We actually only got about 5 minutes of footage and then the battery pooped out. I'm not going to take full responsibility for not bringing the charger, but it was a silly mistake. Monday will be the lighting tests.

Also I'm not going to post any grabs or BTS until after the fest deadline. That's just the way I'm going.

I'm not digging this banner. It's gone through a couple incarnations and we can't get one to look good (we still have the ogee one uploaded). I'm gonna get a good final one hopefully this Friday after our first shoot. Then I won't be so obsessed with unchecking "Show your signature" at the bottom of all my posts.

Some BTS- interesting stuff:

My high-tech super-complicated cool/warm/grey cards-

that I made myself.

Cost me nothing. Works the same.

From the "Warm/cool cards" thread:

I know that when you get all hoity toity and big-shot this isn't the right way to do it, but I print out my own warm/cool/grey cards using Flash and Word.

In Flash I make a box that is big enough for the whole frame, make it blue, and then take the "Alpha" and knock it down to however much it needs to be. I don't do this very often, but you could get as precise as RGB colors to Alpha down to 20%/30%/40%.

Then I go to File>Export>Image. I export it, insert into word, and print. It works fine for me after I tape the edges over a piece of thin cardboard so it is easier to hold. For my SpyFest entry, I used a Nilla Wafer box and a Cheez-it box as my card backings.

My crappy digital camera doesn't do them justice (you need to see them in person for the full effect).

It doesn't cost anything unless you count the fraction of a dollar for ink, paper that you've most likely already got in the printer, and junk food that you probably have somewhere in your house anyways.

Cool posts, zach, thanks for sharing. I never have used the cards, but I'm also not much of a DP/camera guy ...

Still, for those who could benefit, it was great of you to post them! Thanks!

I hope things are still a go. I always like a comedy.

LOL, yes, things are very a go.

It's amazing because not much more could happen between now and the submission date.

Principal shooting starts tomorrow and doesn't end till the 19th. Which gives me... yes folks, less that 12 days to edit entirely.

We're working on the score right now based on storyboards. It's mayhem.

Hopefully it'll be good fun and if you're not laughing with us you're at least laughing at us.

And I will post BTS either May 31st, or June 1st, depending on how itchy I am with the post button. (I just feel like this movie has my big reveal and I don't wanna ruin it with BTS photos, yet).

Thanks for the interest.

Also during the shooting we'll have time to do a proper signature and I won't be so embarrassed of this one, but I kind of like the lameness of this one. It suits us.

Also #2, I'm having a friend send me their copy of Final Cut because of the whole hard drive thing and... GET THIS, because I'm awful at everything except actually pointing and shooting a camera, the Final Cut Box is here, but no discs. Where are they!? It's utter mayhem.

Edit:
I hope I don't get called to do "True Life: I'm a drama queen."
