Final Cut Studio - native P2 import announced

Yeah, apple need to get their act together but i must say as an new owner of the HVX using a P2 workflow i find it to be very easy and reliable. I'm am looking frward to this update and even more so to Final Cut Pro 6!

We've been editing in DVCProHD with FCP 5.0.4 and 5.1 for five months now.

Until very recently virtually no other NLE on either platform supported the Panasonic.

I want FCP to improve as well, but Apple was among the first to support p2 tech and DVCProHD.

I think the mfx should be native bult into the 10.5 operating system so you could preview even without FCP runnung.

Why build it into the OS?

Most people don't need or want it.

Maybe into QT, at least the pro version, but there is no reason to build it into the OS.

For quick easy viewing with less hassle. (I would think, I don't own a Mac yet) Quicker and easier to do than opening FCP. Of course building the functionality into Quicktime pro would accomplish the same thing.

Roughly the same amount of time I have been effortlessly importing directly to the timeline in Edius Broadcast.

To be fair, Apple was first. I would bet that they will come around with what we need to address the P2 evolution -- not only because they have an obligation to a loyal owner base but so that they can have my business (and others like me) in the months ahead.

Clearly FCP is an excellent program. one which I will be willing to try once all the dust clears. It will mean yet another new machine but if it all goes together I'd be willing to give it a go. I'd also like to see Panasonic iron out their end regarding P2Viewer and firmware upgrades that make sense.

This is good news indeed - now they just need full 1080/24p DVCproHD support

You can do 1080/24p. You have to make a custom Setup for it, but I do it pretty often.
To another post here, when did FCP take "10 hours" to import P2 files? I fill up an FS-100 and it takes about 20 minutes. That's still a lot faster than real time capturing.

So, Apple should support native MXF. Fine, that'd be great. But I still don't know what is "wrong" about the way it is handled now? Aside from the wording of MXF and QuickTime. Maybe I'm missing something, but, what would we gain by having FCP support MXF nativley, besides not having to conver to QT wrappers? I'm sure there are benifits aside from that I'm not aware of. I'm just trying to find out what those benifits are.

I already know about the cinema tools method - done it several times. I am hopeful that they will make all the presets you need.

So... are you saying you fill up an FS-100 (100 gigs) and copy/convert that data to your editing workstation in 20 minutes?!?!?! What kind of hardware are you using that allows you to copy 100gig in 20 minutes? My transfers to non-raid systems have all been like 45seconds to a minute per gig!

This is the most likely scenario...there's already an mpeg-2 component for Quicktime (although it's barely usable) and Apple would probably just build the functionality into Quicktime if they're going to do it at all. Let's hope any MXF implementation is better than Quicktime's Mpeg-2 playback...
