Final Cut Studio - native P2 import announced

I doubt it. FCP is QuickTime based and to create a non-QuickTime based would be more than a minor upgrade. It would be something like FCP 6.
I really doubt Apple will get away from QuickTime though.

Good news though. I've been waiting to do an upgrade from 5.0 to 5.1, so this will be enough for me to do it now.

"can batch, can preview before import, can set ins and outs on each shot, is faster, is all around waaaaaaay better."

I wonder how he learned this. Apple is always tight lipped.

What about PAL support for the HVX?

The original link is all we have

Remember it is NOT confirmed, and there isn't any other sources to corroborate the information or learn more

Y'know, I really don't get this. This "quicktime-based" thing is used to somehow give them an excuse to not support MXF.

But -- hello? You can drop an AVI right on the timeline, right? You don't have to convert your AVI's to quicktime! So come on, Apple, add the MXF file format. How hard can it be? Avid did it, and EDIUS did it.

You don't have to convert all your audio files to AIF before you can import 'em. You don't have to convert all your JPGs to PICT before you can import 'em. You don't have to convert your AVIs to MOV before you can import 'em. Why should you have to convert your MXF files before you can import 'em?

They can do this. And we shouldn't be content until they do.

the deal on FCP 5.1.2

the deal on FCP 5.1.2

Here's the deal -

I walked up to Apple booth Friday morning (before show started) at 8:52 and asked if new version. They said come back in 10 minutes..groan.

Next chance I got, on way to lunch on break (working in somebody's booth, remember), I swung by and said to guy working demo station, do you have new version, he says yes, gave me info I posted.

Ships within 30 days he said, version 5.1.2.

considering Apple's usually tight lipped stance, I'd take that as gospel.

Unless, of course, I'm lying and making all this up as part of Evil Master Plan to uh, do something.

>: )

Probably tough to confirm because is in Amsterdam...kinda far away.

So, if I read this correctly, they're improving their P2 support but have stopped shy of MXF support?? An external hard drive (FAT32) full of MXF files copied to it in the field using a Windows laptop would still have to be "converted" before use in FCP 5.1.2??? And "conversion" essentially creates a second copy of the file as .mov meaning roughly 1gig per min (without high end RAID) right?

but wouldnt you want to TRANSFER the files somewhere different from the FAT32 drive ? well its getting converted and transfered at the same time.

and not ALL AVI files will work in final cut pro. AVI , last i was told was just a wrapper and not a compression type. It is possible that PC's converted the AVI using a quicktime codec from Quicktime pro

In a private emai, Mike indicated that he didn't mean to mention anything about a different treatment of MXF files.

I'm not certain what that means, but thought I'd mention it.

Maybe, maybe not. When I've got 300gb full of MXF files that I want to start editing, I certainly don't want to have to wait five or 10 hours to convert and transfer it (plus buy another 300GB) just because FCP refuses to work with the file format as-is.

I certainly don't have to do that with EDIUS. Why would I want to with FCP?

Heck, that's almost as bad as having to digitize/capture footage. Not much better than a tape-based workflow at that point, versus how EDIUS and, to a lesser degree, Avid do it. Especially EDIUS -- that's true tapeless.

We've got a tapeless system here, let's not settle for an editing platform that doesn't embrace tapeless properly.

well its getting converted and transfered at the same time.
But the converted version is a notably inferior way to go. Why would you want to settle for less than optimal? Just because that's how Apple chose to do it? The EDIUS workflow is heads and shoulders above the Apple import/convert workflow. If I was an FCP user I'd want them to set their standards higher, not just be grateful that they've given us some back-door patch to sort of work with the files.

The point is, Apple COULD do it if they just expended the effort. Avid does it, Liquid does it (in SD), EDIUS does it, Premiere Pro with AXIO does it. Heck, everybody but Apple is doing it, or so it seems. So why don't they just go that extra effort and allow us to drop MXF files right on the timeline? And why would anyone be satisfied with anything less?

and not ALL AVI files will work in final cut pro.
Then that's another shortcoming on their part, isn't it?

AVI , last i was told was just a wrapper and not a compression type.
That's true. Exactly like what Quicktime is. Exactly like what MXF is.

That's why FCP can work with AVIs -- they just added the code to understand how to unwrap the files. And that's all they'd have to do for the MXF files too.

I don't think people should be apologizing for Apple on this issue. They should be demanding proper integrated support. Something like 80% of HVX users are on the Mac, and wouldn't even dream of using a PC for anything (I don't know, maybe they're afraid of getting dirty or something). So they have no idea how sweet the tapeless workflow can be. And they won't, until Apple goes that last extra step and gives us MXFs on the timeline.

And who knows, maybe this Mike Curtis bit is actually the part we need -- maybe they *have* implemented it. We won't know until we get some official details and confirmation. But if they haven't, then that's no reason to be satisfied. Sure we'll take the improvements that they offer and be glad of them, but I would expect every FCP-using HVX owner should be sending them notices demanding MXF implementation on the timeline.

Yeah, apple need to get their act together but i must say as an new owner of the HVX using a P2 workflow i find it to be very easy and reliable. I'm am looking frward to this update and even more so to Final Cut Pro 6!

True, but i am satisfied right now. THe upgrade already from not having to use tapes, EVER AGAIN, as well as still being able to use an NLE that ive spent the last 5 years becoming a master at with the current workflow is enough for me now. OF course i want more support and what not, but right now i am satisfied with how things have been going so far, and personally i would rather wait around than switch to another NLE.

Yeah i got to say i was so worried about my new HVX turning up and going through all the problems i have heard about FCP's workflow but i have got to say that i love it and have no problems with the workflow. But then again i have only shot about 16mins so far!

But it would be great to have 720p25 and 50 included. But untill then i have bought P2 log.

I think the mfx should be native bult into the 10.5 operating system so you could preview even without FCP runnung.
