Final Cut Importing

Sorry if this has been answered, but I'm really in a rush and didn't have time to look around. I'm shooting 720PN on an HVX for some commercial spots and and am new to the workflow.

I've got a Macbook Pro and two Lacie HDs. The plan was to Dub to MiniDV for emergency backup, and then import to disk, and backup on other disk. What I really need to know is, can I connect these drives to my computer, and then capture P2 content directly to them via Final Cut? Can someone walk me through it? Do the HDs have to be formatted in a certain way, because they have plenty of free space, but have data on them that I can't delete. Thanks for the help, sorry if its a repetitive question.

Just for safety's sake, I like to save the original MXF's.

So, copy the contents of your P2 cards to your hard drives.

Import into FCP from the hard drive rather than from the P2 card.

Your drives need to be MacOS Extended. Many drives come formatted FAT32, so just reinitialize the drives before using.

If I'm not mistaken, won't reinitializing the drives erase them? I can't get rid of the content on my drives already, and I really have nowhere else to put it.

Besides that, how can I check this sort of formatting and how do I reinitialize the drives.

You select the drive and then hit apple or command/I.

You format the drives using the Disk Utility in the Applications/Utility folder.

Copy the contents to the boot drive and then format the external and copy back.

This pretty basic stuff. Might want to get an introductory book on MacOS X.

lol.. you dont really NEED to have a MAC formatted drive.. just anytime you have a file that will be larger than 4GB you will be screwed.. Otherwise if it's just some short takes, go for it..
