Jessica Alba

Jessica Alba

Vic you might start with a chat with a Spanish radio station dj (they can probably direct you to a few local record labels that might work).

I called a station. I'm going to talk to the rep over there tomorrow. I'm looking everywhere on the Internet for a Hispanic singer or even actress to play the title role.

Of course, I'd love to have someone like Jessica Alba play it, but that might be out of the question, I don't know...

FYI there's a perfectly good (and open) thread to continue discussing Corrado right here...

The original will remain closed as a resource (the information isn't going anywhere).

You can also discuss CORRADO here. I think the way CORRADO was financed and produced has a lot of relevance to the discussion of THE WOMAN AT THE WELL.

Adam has been kind enough to point the way that THE WOMAN AT THE WELL can be financed much easier by first choosing a marketable CAST. I think it is very generous of Adam to point the way for me to follow in this crucial first step.

Adam correctly identified my problem with not being able to find funders on Kickstarter; I think I have been unambitious.

If I could get an actress like Jessica Alba to play THE WOMAN AT THE WELL, I think the movie will find buyers in the International markets. Of course, I don't have the skills of Adam to negotiate with agents; but perhaps Adam will be willing to give me some pointers.

We will all benefit from all pointers from filmmakers who have succeeded in marketing their movies. I value all input from Brandon, Faith, Nate, Zak, and Adam.

Please continue relating your experience toward THE WOMAN AT THE WELL.

I'm at the early stages, but I need advice like everybody else.

Corrado thread's still around. I just bumped it up. The thread died because Adam stopped posting in it. When Adam would come back every once and awhile it would cause the thread to pick up heat again. And I agree with Filmman, Corrado's awesome but I want to hear about some new stuff. I think Adam put his money where his mouth was and it paid off.

First off Jessica Alba as the woman at the well? No. Project would never be taken seriously. You could cast Megan Fox if that's the case. I mean if you had big money to attach a star get someone less pop corn. Second off you don't need her or any big star. All you need is one good actress, a SAG Core person whose been in some things that we know and maybe has a bit of a following couldn't hurt. And a good actor to play Jesus. Shop it around to Christian film distributors and you will probably sell it because no one's done that story to my knowledge. You'll probably have to make Jesus a white guy to sale it though. Just giving you a heads up. I know I said make him a dark skinned Jew when you were thinking about self-distribution, but if you want to sell it then you'll probably have to go white.

Changes are in the works :)

BTW, I just read the new rules; dude, you totally rock! One might ask "Is it possible for one person to rock so hard?" I say yes! You man! You rock! But in all seriousness, great work man. I love the new guidelines. They make 100% sense.

"I love the new guidelines. They make 100% sense." Good job Brandon, it answered all my questions about starting a production thread/journal in the near future. I would also say that Vic should consider who the distributor most likely would be for casting purposes. If he is aiming at a distributor specializing in the Latino market that would also be a major factor in casting (it is more limiting but might be a much easier sell to distributors who are already placing dvds in walmarts and other major outlets).

Try for one of the ex-pornstars that became Christian and get her to play the part. Headline: "Exporn star becomes Christian film actress in Vic Alexander's "Woman at the Well". I mean honestly there's a whole thing that could be done there, but you'd have to make sure it was one that has actually gotten saved and she isn't straddling the line.

Yeah, well, that's what I started out with -- nah, the gold miners had nothing to do with the main story; they were minor players in the original script.

So when that didn't fly with Kickstarter, I thought ok, let me go with a more traditional Christian story ... and now that doesn't seem to fly; although I left it up there because there is one person still looking at it -- he might finance it (slim chance.)

In a few days, I might have to revise the project again -- until the last day of the Kickstarter period is up. Then, I will probably put THE WOMAN AT THE WELL on the back burner and move forward with another project which is completely scripted, partly cast and I even have trailer material for. I will need to cut a new trailer, and I hope you will continue to help me with the trailer editing ideas.

But back to THE WOMAN AT THE WELL (there's still almost a whole month left!) I'm afraid of doing it the way you suggest, because suppose it ends up the other way around? THE WOMAN AT THE WELL actress ends up as ... well, I don't want to say it; but imagine that, Nate! ... and in a Victor Alexander movie! :crybaby: If I did it as a contemporary felliniesque movie, then yeah it would work....

No, I think I'll stick with a Latin singer for another few days until I find out what support I can find from Spanish record labels.

I agree with Vic, not much more to say on Corrado. I'm very glad it remains there as a locked resource for posterity's sake.

I'm still deciding whether to do a Hangar 14 thread. The problem is that I'm not convinced of the relevance of that thread here. There will be almost nothing worth posting that one could go duplicate without doing a film like Corrado first.

Either that, or it's just posted for entertainment purposes to keep people up to date on the project. I never sought to entertain with my threads....that's what my movies are for.

Actually Adam, your threads are also inspirational and everyone learns something new every shoot (at least I have). People who weren't around for Corrado may go back and read it based on a new thread about your new film and also ways of doing things emerge, new information comes to light and all kinds of other good reasons to do a "Hangar 14" thread. I'm sure it will be welcome here.

I found CORRADO to be a ... therapeutic thread. Every morning I did my Robert DeNiro impersonation, "You talkin' to me?" (I was imagining an agent had just returned my call ) "You talkin' to me?" (I can't do the DeNiro look worth a darn!) "You talkin' to me!"

Anyway, I felt better after that. The CORRADO thread put me in the right mood to continue editing and completing my movie THE RED QUEEN.

So for me the CORRADO thread was all about getting actors before there was money in the bank; even though this still remains the most elusive part. All the agents end up saying, "Do you have the money in escrow?"

The fact of the matter is that you had the money to make the movie and the agents believed you; but what you didn't tell the agents was that you had investors who would go in with you as well.

What blew me away is that you had the gall ... ehem, I mean't the hutzpah, to shop your project around even when you had a distributor interested in CORRADO at the script stage.

Well, the script was excellent. (I read the first part only. It was snatched away early one day before I could read it.)

So, ultimately the reason that you kept the thread going for so long was that, if I remember correctly, that it served as your production journal; it kept you on track ... as an internal dialogue. I think that's what you said.

For many people, the thread was dynamite. Each person took what they needed from it. It was, as Nate said, inspirational to filmmakers in general.

You're an excellent thread writer :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG) as well as an excellent script writer. So, yeah, it would be great if you wrote a HANGAR 14 thread. We could all learn how to get a movie into production. It was hard for people to follow your steps with the CORRADO, because you are one of the few people who could pull that type of production off -- as your first feature film! With HANGAR 14 again it will be easier for you, but not necessarily easier for us here. Most of us are still making our first film -- even after four films :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG).

And who's going to read my thread after you post a HANGAR 14 thread? Well, you must promise to drop by once in a while and tell me what I'm doing wrong .

Well, We'll see Vic.

H14 is an order of magnitude harder to get off the ground than Corrado ever was. I look back at those achievements and go....man, was that easy. H14 has demanded a very high price to be made. Each phase of it has been fought tooth and nail, like some protracted world war I trench battle where many lives are fought for a few yards of soil.

I've experienced some great successes with H14's development process, and also some spectacular disappointments.

Movies are always hard to get made, but in this economic climate, even harder. Everyone is vigilant about every penny.

I might do a limited thread; still thinking about it.

What I don't want you guys to do is use anymore of Vic's bandwidth on this thread asking me to make my another thread. Let's turn the spotlight back on Vic and his process and help him out. You'll know if and when I make one. Promise!

I'm real curious to know of these battles, because what made CORRADO a great thread was the fact you were the only one who broke through to mainstream filmmaking. You got your movie into the AFM and it competed successfully in the foreign markets. To me that was huge. Of course, you had the elements wired. I don't mean to get you pissed off, but if you'd shot in 35mm you would've gone far beyond... But that's just my opinion and I can't prove it.

I think it would be very helpful for us; however, it has to make sense to you, because you shouldn't squander your opportunities. You are at a point to say goodbye to all this and just begin cranking out one mainstream movie after another. I'd love to work with you as a DP.

What I don't want you guys to do is use anymore of Vic's bandwidth on this thread asking me to make my another thread. Let's turn the spotlight back on Vic and his process and help him out. You'll know if and when I make one. Promise!
I agree, if everyone donates one dollar to my Kickstarter project, it might start an avalanche :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

With respect to THE WOMAN AT THE WELL -- seriously, it's best to do a movie the way I want to make it rather than make something that fits into someone else niche or conception of what film-making is about.

As soon as I have my car's water pump fixed up, I'm going to take a couple of actors to the location I've chosen for THE WOMAN AT THE WELL and shoot the opening scene of the movie.

Then I'll look at it on my G5 in FCP 5.04 and from there I'll decide where I'm going with the movie. I like the organic process of making a movie. So it's collaboration but it will be from within the medium itself.

Kickstarter is a very valuable lesson. I learned that felliniesque doesn't work as a way to find an audience ... because nobody outside the film-making community knows what felliniesque means (none of the Fellini movies had a broad release in the US.)

I learned that a straight telling of a Bible story isn't acceptable as entertainment ... that's what churches are for, I guess. Of course it can be argued: do they?

I learned that a genre approach leads only to a niche audience release, and although this is profitable, as in the case of NGL, this is not what I wanted for THE WOMAN AT THE WELL.

I want THE WOMAN AT THE WELL to be a general release -- just as you correctly pointed out earlier in this thread: a Christian movie need not announce that it is a Christian movie. I learned that from you debating this point -- I agree with your assessment. I think your film DIVINITY and El Director's film RISE OF THE BEAST are examples of movies with a Christian theme that do not necessarily cater to Christian audiences. I think STIGMATA was a successful good example of this approach.

So I'm learning a lot from the Kickstarter experience, namely that sometimes a film-maker has to stick to his guns in order to make a movie. Funding is great but if it comes at the cost of derailing one's vision then what good is it; it's like making a genre movie that only a certain class of distributor or agent will deal with.

I will always remember Bill Smith's comment about B-Movies; he called them porno without sex.

I meant to say that your movies do not cater ONLY to Christian audiences. It sounded like I said they don't appeal to any Christians.

With regard to A WOMAN AT THE WELL, again I want to make a movie that goes a little deeper into the meaning of the story of THE WOMAN AT THE WELL. For me the whole point of my film will be the statement: Salvation is from the Jews. I want to get into that with a 90 minute movie and explore it from the Ancient Aramaic perspective.

THE WOMAN AT THE WELL is going to be my reply to MEL GIBSON's biased movie about the last hours of Jesus before the Crucifixion.

So I assume you'll have Jesus played by a dark skinned Jewish guy with hair of wool like he's described in the Bible right? In my next film all the Jewish characters will played by darker skinned Jews (or Middle Easterners at least).

Hair like wool? I think that's in Revelation, right? When John sees Jesus...

Anyway, I don't think that the skin color matters. The main thing is the performances -- and the dialogue of course. I'm thinking of not showing Jesus much, or maybe at all -- just from over the shoulder angling on the Samaritan woman most of the time.

I have many impressionistic ideas about how to show Jesus.

So really it's more about the woman at the well than about Jesus; but I want the dialogue to be authentic and true to the Scriptures. The main line is: Salvation is from the Jews. I want to concentrate on the interpretation of this line, because that's where I'll debate the bias issue.

For me this project is as much theological as artistic. Unfortunately I can't talk about the theology here. So that's why I'm making the movie ... it is to be able to present my theological opinions to the fullest.

I wish I'm funded through Kickstarter. With $25,000 I would make a great movie. Working with pocket money, the best I can do is get really creative (felliniesque) and not worry about making the movie into a perfect period piece. It will be far from a perfect period piece in fact. LOL

I love felliniesque filmmaking and so I won't have any problems doing the movie the way I want after all.
