I agree with Hunter007 (Kegan I guess). Its pretty easy for everyone to be involved in a tech or a "wow you made it, maybe I can also" chat but a simple discussion of the hard work needed to write a good screenplay or the odds of getting an agent as an actor/writer/director and the steps/ real work needed to achieve those goals isn't very sexy.
If I was casting today and being realistic with the money you have Vic I might look at a Spanish language singer on the rise. You would have a built in market and she might very well do it for the exposure and the love of the material (a little cash plus points).

I really like that idea, lambert! I'm going to search for her ... and singers have a following; this is a great suggestion.

You might talk with a Spanish music label. They have a history of working hand in hand with filmakers to cross-market music and features.

Hey Adam, I searched on this site to see if you were posting and found this.

I agree with the spirit of your post, but in fairness, Reduser by definition is the place to talk about Red tech, not all that other stuff that should come first. So yeah, I expect to only read about everything you mentioned about Reduser.

So for the other stuff, can you recommend me a good forum where professional and/or helpful people discuss "how to obtain and retain an agent. How to write a killer logline. How to attend a film market and make a presale. How to develop a relationship with a studio"?

Both of you make valid points, but the way I see it is there are indeed forums for all that stuff right here on DVXU and believe it or not that's not what the User Films section is for. This is where we showcase our films and whatever the conversation becomes, it becomes as long as it's about the film. Ironically this is Vic best thread yet and most informative. He's learned a lot and we've learned thanks to Adam, Brandon and others. In the "Red Queen" thread people saw the trailer said some stuff and eventually left. 60% of the thread was Filmman talking to Filmman.

What I mean is when we showcase our projects, discussions happen. Because of the type of forum this is a lot if it will be tech. Adam's thread was great, but it had it's amount of tech discussion as well. Bus his thread had something else...it was a story. Like a the movie itself, the thread had stars, a plot, a beginning, middle and end. We watched a film go from "Hey, I got an idea for a film" to "Hey, my film is being sold in this many territories and has made over a million bucks." On top of all that it was a "how too" guide for people who wanted to do just what Adam did.

In the User Films section conversations go down many different paths, but we all know DVXU loves a good tech thread. So I have no problems with it as long as useful information is being given. I think we helped Vic and probably others because I don't think everyone reading the thread responded. I didn't even know some of the stuff.

And many of the threads don't get followed up on. Someone makes a great trailer, a few people say it's good or bad and then it's gone. Vic had another great thread, the original thread where we helped him cut a trailer. Now that was a good User Films thread in my opinion. The "Butterflies" thread. In the end Vic pimped the heck out of that trailer. The "Red Queen" trailer was different, that one just grows on you.

Either way, I don't think the User Films section is for all those other things. Yes they shoould be discussed but at the same time there are other sections for those things in themselves in the overall "Filmmaking" section.

Shawn (and Brandon Rice)....

That forum doesn't exist. Yet. A couple months ago, I e-mailed Zak to discuss that very thing. It's a topic he and I had discussed briefly for quite some time, but nothing ever comes of it.

Filmspecific.com is where I do most of my posting, but it too is too far into the world of distribution and pre-sales to be generalized filmmaking. There needs to be a forum...a place where people can discuss the lifestyle of making films and how films get made without talking too much about cameras, gear, tech, etc....and also without dwelling on the mechanics of pre-sales, foreign markets, bonds, etc.

There really is no general filmmaking forum out there right now. My personal opinion is that DVX is too much hardware and not enough software. And I don;t mean software in a computer sense.

People need a place to learn the ropes of the business of actual filmmaking. Not selling DVDs from your site. Not selling them on Facebook. Not shooting shorts. Not using kickstarter. I'm talking Hollywood style film making.

And Brandon, if you've been bequeathed moderator powers, you should look into creating such a forum here.

There's many forums here on DVXU that discuss all that, only they're not as big of a deal as some of the tech forums. Look at the "Business and PostProduction" forum. It does discuss a lot of this. The problem is you have to jump around and know the forum pretty well. It even has a sticky about creating movie posters and how to get in the business and stay in it and many other thing. The "Rocket Indie" thread is mainly about distribution, not just Rocket indie, but it gets very little viewership. And there's an Acting forum, Directing and many other forums right here so I really don't see the problem.

I know we all like to hang out in the user film forum and chill, but the other threads have a lot of info in them, tons actually. Keep in mind too that much of the tech discussion was appropriate for the situation (as far as this thread is concerned). If every thread could be like yours, Brandon's or Faith's then we'd be really rockin' reading all these great stories of what's going on with these films.

And the last, not least thing I'd say is a lot of people on DVX want to make their own films outside the system so they like to hear about stuff getting big, but aren't particularly interested in doing it themselves. Not the "Hollywood" way. I know it's odd in someways, but now creators want total control over their creations.

That's the problem: It gets very little viewership. I think that's what taormina would like to see change. The way to do that would be to start a more focused section. The BUSINESS/POST PRODUCTION portion of the site is very hard to navigate effectively at the moment. Probably because business/post production are very broad topics.

Break them down into a few more specific topics under the umbrella and I think it could be a lot better, and get a lot more viewership. Just my two cents.

And of course, understanding that "Hollywood film making" is different for everyone. In my travels, when meeting successful individuals in the industry, their stories are almost ALWAYS different, but have led to success by all accounts.

And Brandon, if you've been bequeathed moderator powers, you should look into creating such a forum here.

There are some cool things on the horizon for the USER FILMS section to be exact, and I am hoping we can attract some more professional producers and directors here as well.

I think the thing is the membership interest. Even broken down into specific topics if the membership aren't interested, they aren't interested. How do you get the interest and keep it in a particular forum. Like this thread has zig-zagged between many things yet it remains interesting and stays alive.

That sounds pretty awesome.

We are looking to keeping the USER FILMS section about the process of different film projects, and keeping that on point. I don't know about all of you, but reading about different experiences and challenges of other filmmakers helps me tremendously, and I always learn something.

I think the popular threads reflect the struggle to make movies. And we learn from that.

Filmmaking always requires struggle. It is a complicated process of creating art. Many young people starting out to become filmmakers forget the fact that even seasoned filmmakers need help get off the ground sometimes.

In the late eighties Orson Wells was struggling to complete his last movie. It was the most innovative of his movies, a lot like the movies you see on Youtube today. I would call it experimental and even felliniesque. None of the major studios or distributors offered to finance it or release it. It was starring a lot of famous people, many friends of Orson Wells, such as John Houston.

I was renting a flatbed editing table from one of the Hollywood editorial houses. I was shooting and editing an independent movie. The rental house told me that Orson Wells was behind in rental fees on one of their flatbeds. It really bothered me; I wasn't aware that someone like Orson Wells was struggling to make a movie. He even passed away before completing it.
A few years ago, I got an email from a producer who wanted me to donate 50,000 ft of rawstock so he could complete Orson Wells' movie. I quoted him a very low price but he wanted it for free -- didn't even offer me a percentage of the movie. Anyway, a few months later, I read in the LA Times that the negative was in a Paris film vault and there was a foreign producer who was asking for $5 million for the negative elements and the rights to the movie.

You would think someone in Hollywood would buy that movie and complete the last scene that Orson Wells had planned to shoot. It is a highly creative scene too. It is about the celebration of a famous filmmaker's birthday (played by John Houston). It was to be shot by film students using different format cameras. Orson Wells wanted to combine all those different media and perspectives in the final scene of the movie. I think it was a brilliant idea.

Awesome! So use your new mod power to unlock the most useful thread in dvxuser history that sits buried in user films, the Corrado thread. Once you unlock it, we'll bump it with some follow up questions and keep it relevant.

What would be best is if Adam started a new thread for his upcoming movie. CORRADO is already out in distribution. What else is Adam going to write about? What he gets for each territory or how he is paying back his investors?

For us on this user group the most important topic is the filmmaking process while it's going on -- like in this thread for THE WOMAN AT THE WELL. I don't hear you asking questions or commenting on this project. Why is that?

But thanks for visiting anyway. You have the right to remain silent ... just kidding you, Shawn. You don't have to tithe

I Googled Spanish record labels and I got lost in the search. Do you know of some that I might call locally here in LA?

THE WOMAN AT THE WELL could be made for less than $25,000.

Working with my own money means that I can make the movie according to my own ideas. THE WOMAN AT THE WELL is intended as a web movie. I intend to stay close to the actual text of the Gospel of John, chapter 4. I think there are more opportunities for creativity by not making the movie fit the genre of Christian movies.

Genre filmmaking is aimed at getting distribution; THE WOMAN AT THE WELL is aimed at the web audience. If it has any other potential that's just gravy.

Vic you might start with a chat with a Spanish radio station dj (they can probably direct you to a few local record labels that might work).
