We are filming night scenes on the FS7 using SLOG 3 and a 709 Lut. Zebras are set at 70 and base ISO at 800. Many of the scenes are lit with 800 watt tungsten lights. In most cases even with the lens wide open at 2.8 we still are without zebras. On the viewfinder the image looks great. But since grain in the blacks may be a problem later, I tend to press the gain switch to 1600. This adds noise and often still does not reach Zebra level. At 3200 the lmage seems to pick up a lot of noise but the zebras start to show up. So the question is the following: Do I trust the viewfinder or only the zebras? My feeling is that SLOG 3 is useless in night scenes as the Zebras are almost never reached and since the dynamic range is very small anyways. Yet I dont want to switch back and forth between SLOG and regular video during a production. So should I trust the viewfinder or should I hit the gain switch?
