As to shutter speed, think in terms of still photography and you'll understand. Faster is used in shooting fast action, horse racing, car racing, etc. to 'freeze' the subject in motion. Slower speeds lead to blurs, etc. Secondly, it's the shutter opening for less time to allow less light in to the film in photography. As you shoot with a faster shutter speed, you might have to open the iris more. That is the "f stop" in still photography. It affects depth of field, so understanding the relationship between iris opening and shutter speed is critical to mastering your camera. that's a short answer, and you can find good resources on this elsewhere on the web.
