Filming in the snow.. I want to be prepared

As to shutter speed, think in terms of still photography and you'll understand. Faster is used in shooting fast action, horse racing, car racing, etc. to 'freeze' the subject in motion. Slower speeds lead to blurs, etc. Secondly, it's the shutter opening for less time to allow less light in to the film in photography. As you shoot with a faster shutter speed, you might have to open the iris more. That is the "f stop" in still photography. It affects depth of field, so understanding the relationship between iris opening and shutter speed is critical to mastering your camera. that's a short answer, and you can find good resources on this elsewhere on the web.

Polarizer - Which One?

Polarizer - Which One?

Someone mentioned in an earlier post to use a Polarizer to shoot in the snow.

Well I received a 72mm "Circular Polarizer" as a Christmas gift and was wondering if this would work ok with the HMC150 or if there is any difference between this Polarizer and another?

Thanks for any input:violent5::happy:

I have a polarizer on my HMC-150. Works just fine. No, I don't think there is any difference in polarizers. Remember that the sun should be at 90 degrees to the subject for best results, if I remember correctly. From Wikip: "...filters out light polarized perpendicularly to the axis of the filter."

Hmc150 rated to only 0 degrees?

Hmc150 rated to only 0 degrees?

Looking at the manual it seems that the 150 is not rated for cold weather shooting. Ideas why? Anyone having problems w/ it?

Only problem is the focus ring (same with the HPX170). It gets stiff in the cold. Even when above freezing. Otherwise no problems here.

I overcome the stiff focus ring with a remote focus. I have the varizoom that has the focus, zoom and ris controls.

Thanks for the input on the Circular Polarizer, time to break it out and give it a whirl.

Going to look into the remote focus option as well.

Cheers,
Chris

the circular polarizer is exactly what you want.

the advantage of a circular polarizer is that you can rotate it to match the angle of the surface that the light is reflecting off of....not all snow-covered hills and slopes are a flat 0 degrees. ;)

and it works well for other reflective surfaces too like car windows or hoods.

awesome, thanks for the 411 Averan, much appreciated.

Denwa, which varizoom do you currently use with the HMC150? I was looking at their website and was checking out the StealthDVX which is on sale for $100. Have you been happy with your varizoom?

Thanks in advance

I have th VZ RockPZFI. I like it. Especially for event video. I do wish the focus knob was about twice the diameter. Since it's attached to the stem of the pot by a set screw one could probably replace it. I just haven't gotten around to finding a larger knob yet.

Only really need a larger knob for focus pulls. Bit touchy with the smaller stock knob.
