Filming in the cold

I starting filming for my schools film festival on Sunday and it was just a mess. I got the horizontal blue bars and I think it's cause of it being sub 30 degrees when filming. I lost some really good shots and it really pissed me off.

What can I do to keep my DVX warm in the cold?

I can't vouch for how well it works (or if it works), but Porta Brace makes a product called a Polar Bear Mitt. Essentially, its a mitten that wraps around your hand and camera that you can put hand warmer pouches in to keep it all warm. B&H has it for either $200 or $300.

I've filmed a few winter scenes and never had a problem. Guys are capturing snowboarding and skiing footage all winter long. Wonder if you had something else going on? Aliens interfering or whatever? Was it windy? I have a raincoat for my DVX and that would stop the windchill!!!!

Dont re-use tape. SAME THING happened to me yesterday. Lucky the light sucked so i didnt loose THAT much...

Ya I use a rain cover when shooting in the snow, even though it doesn't get very cold in mammoth... Also, before I got a cover I would use a plastic bag. It helps insulate a little.

What do you mean don't reuse tape. Your saying each day I should use a new tape...I shot saturday with almost no problems and then Sunday with too many problems.

That could be it.

on the same tape?

personally i reuse all the time for my practising and i hardly have problems ( i do have the occasional drop out). but for real work i use a tape once and thats it.

I can't use a tape once and that's it. If I only shoot for 20min, I feel the other 43min of that tape are just wasted. I hate wasting tape. I usally record down to zero. I'm guessing that's bad?

oh alright. I never tape over footage. Once its full I put it away.

I found a usb heated blanket...so after every 15-20min I'm gonna wrap it and wait like 5 min.

And I'm gonna use my cleaning tape every time I warm up cause I'm shooting in a really dusty environment.

I'd advice against using ur cleaning tapes in that way. Reason being they are very harsh and abrasive on ur tape heads, and are to be used very sparingly (5 second runs each time u use and not more than 2 times consecutively) . To be honest i dont even use them. I have one for emergencys in a pinch while i shoot... but i manual clean my tape heads. Manually cleaning doesnt have any harsh effects and because of that u can clean it as often as u want. But u have to know what ur doing. You cant do that in the field though.
