File conversion help

This may be a silly question but it's very specific and I have not seen anything like it posted before (although I realize I could be wrong so if thats the case I'm sorry for posting it again)

Anyway I myself am a premiere cs4 editor and recently picked up an HMC-150. I shot a job for a client who will be editing in FCP. I have used Adobe Media Encoder before to convert the MTS files to other formats such as mpg, avi, mp4, ect. However I was wondering if any one has used Adobe Media Encoder to convert files for use in FCP. Will FCP handle the file if I give my client an mp4 converted in Adobe Media Encoder?

Someone please help I am working with a deadline here.

Unfortunately Adobe Media Encoder doesn't export to an HD .mov. Any quicktime file or .mov I can export to is DV NTSC. however, Listed under "h.264" I have the option to export an mp4 at just about every resolution and frame rate I would need. (Even has youtube and myspace presets, along with many others, for future reference) Thats why I am asking specificaly about the mp4.

mp4 will not work.

Are you on a Mac?

Because I regularly use a custom QT export out of AME to go to any QT codec on my computer.

Problem is learning what the client wants to edit in while using FCP. Most likely it will be pro res, and unless you have FCP, you don't have pro res.

you will have to download and register the quicktimeplayer or with itunes to get mov files that will play inside FC.
I dont use FC but I have done this before.

But you want the conversion to a QT codec that is one of the easy set ups in FCP.

Just converting it to any QT codec isn't going to work.

OK well I tried to put the footage in a timeline and exported to tape.... but that recorder nothing to the tape? HELP?!?!?!

Did I miss something? I thought FCP didn't have support for AVCHD? If thats the case then that would make life a lot easier! Can someone clear this up for me?

You can get AVCHD/MTS files into FCP 6.0.5 in at least five separate ways.

That's why I'm asking why you are trying to convert to provide .mov files.

well now i found out that my client is on an older version of FCP (5 something) Does anyone have any information on bring the files into older versions? Will he need 3rd party software to convert the footage? If so what programs can I tell him to look into?

Hi Zeroblank,

There is a software called Videopier HD.

I use it to convert my AVCHD footage into .MOV files (using the Apple Intermediate Codec option)

After the AVCHD files have been converted, he can import them to FCP 5 for editing.
