FD Lens problem, Aperture ring wont go on lock ("A")

Title pretty much sums it up.

I have a Canon 50mm f/1.8 FD mount, and for some reason, the aperture ring won't slide over to auto, and therefore wont enable me to open up the rear lens cap (you can see how thats a problem). Has anyone ever encountered this problem before?

I've never experienced this. Is there a small button on the aperture ring? If so, make sure it's pressed in when you turn the ring to the A position. Which, by the way, isn't to lock it - it's to set the aperture to Auto (i.e. controlled by the camera - which of course doesn't work on modern EOS cameras).

You should be able to remove the cap whatever the position of the aperture ring. Make sure you push the cap in slightly as you twist it. Or, if you're using the old-style FD kens (with the silver locking ring at the rear), make sure you have that ring turned all the way round.

Im talking about the silver lock ring in the back, it wont twist at all, ultimately not letting me take the back cap off (not sure what to call it).

The silver lock ring should move no matter what the aperture setting - it twists clockwise (as you're looking at the back of the lens) and then the rear lens cap comes away.

It might be that someone just jammed the rear lens cap in there. You can use quite a bit of force on the lock ring - those old lenses are very substantial. The worst you'll do is damage the plastic rear lens cap
