FCPX When?

That would be an excellent suggestion David!

Unfortunately, as with all of their other apps, they are targeting the mass consumer and the professional user is being left out to dry.

The first line in the manual is "Final Cut Pro X was made for both the amateur and professional alike." (Emphasis mine)

In every other editing or graphics app I have used, and I have used them all in my 22 year career, this is the first time features were not only not added, but taken away.

Where did you get the manual? Can I get the manual?

Are there any forum posts or blogs that have leaked info that is covered by NDA? I wouldn't mind a link if so, would love to read up...

Features were taken away in FCP X? I guess we will only know that for sure when it ships. I do question if we'll have a separate Viewer, though. Will wait and see.

I agree with David that just because it's accessible to amateurs doesn't mean it isn't useful or powerful, but I would hope that Apple hasn't so bent-over backwards for those users that the app isn't useful. Tread cautiously (i.e. don't throw $300 bucks at Apple until some of us "civilians" have been able to actually use the thing), and keep an open mind.

Photoshop is also made for both amateur and professional photographers.

Yeah but who uses Photoshop. I guess I will always be an amatuer since I will be editing on a non-pro suite and not shooting with a Red.

The one thing great about the market right now is that their are affordable alternatives if you don't like the changes to Final Cut.

So, back on topic.. when are they going to release it already!!

I saw it from a colleague of mine.

No multicam.
No viewer.
No xml support
No edl support
No deck ingest or layoff
Media manager has far less options than it did.
No more Color
No more Soundtrack.
And no, you can't open your fcpro 7 projects in fcpx.

It is ImoviePro, imo.

So, is this guy a beta tester? If so, he just leaked info that breaks his NDA, and is in HUGE trouble now. "No more Color. No more Soundtrack." OK, he has to actually work on the Apple development team to know that, and is about to be fired.

2 thoughts. If you did see FCP X, then it was a beta copy, and not completed. And having been shown a beta copy by a tester or Apple employee, would be illegal under NDA from Apple, and someone has just been put in jeopardy. Either way, you saw a beta copy, so let's take that with a grain of salt.

No, we did not see "Color gone" at NAB. We got a brief "glimpse of a new version of the Color Correction already in FCP, nothing more. I am very close with folks who work for Apple, and none of them know anything. If you're not on the dev team, nothing is known for sure. If you're on the dev team, you won't risk your job and a law suit by leaking info. That's all I know.

It's all speculation until we see the final product. I am personally nervous about a few issues, but I won't jump to any conclusions or state facts without solid evidence to back it up, until the final product is released.

Have a look at Final Cut Pro X preview videos and compare it to Sony Vegas 10d.
Apple has, let's say, adopted a lot features that have been available for Vegas Pro users for years.
That agile workflow is what makes FCP X so attractive as it puts the fun back in editing.
Maybe Apple does it right and FCP X becomes king of the NLEs for a time.
Vegas has become unstable and unreliable and many users have moved on.
Thing I don't like about making the switch is I have to get a Mac, and that'll cost.
Don't plan to do anything straight away as there will no doubt be some worms in this new Apple offering.

I think you are in denial Ben. Shock will do that. I was in denial at first too. "Why on earth would they do that? They wouldn't really do that, would they? They CAN'T do that!" But, they are.

{For Fun: Speculation Filter Applied}

Ok, this is all starting to make sense. If that screen grab is correct, it looks like Motion got a freshening up with new background and other goodies, but probably still a separate entity in a segment that perhaps Apple is willing to cede to After Effects but feels obliged to "play pro or make the pros who use Motion happy"--at least for a bit. Motion is nice but even with the round-tripping convenience still doesn't (unfortunately) win over many supporters that I know of.

My thinking is, if they really reworked the pro-apps from the top down (vs. bottom up a.k.a iMovie Pro) then you'd like to think Motion would have been front and center for this. This is total BS on my part, but it could be they freshened up Motion and put her out on the streets to turn tricks in the Mac App store since the pro Apps could be a thing of the past. Of course, it could be totally awesome or lame or somewhere in between or not even a real image and still being worked on!!!

XSan - gone
Color, DVDSpro - gone???
Motion - minimum upgrade?
XML, viewer, and ability to open FCP 7 projects - gone??

Doesn't seem like they want to be bothered with the fussy pro sh*t at all.

I hope the new version at least still has scopes if no viewer! If what others have said here is true, you can bet somewhere along the line Apple's intentions to go iMovie pro on us slipped (or guessed) by Avid and thus the generous cross-grad path.

{Speculation filter off}

I'm still excited to see what is going on with this and I think the teaser FCP super meet videos looks pretty slick and like the idea of magnetic timeline and BG rendering.

Who knows. But one thing occurs to me - you guys probably don't follow iMovie, so you won't remember this, but when iMovie first got its big do-over in iMovie 08, it was a huge fuss, because the 08 dropped a whole bunch of features from the HD 06 version. Gradually since then, they've been slowly adding back many of the features dropped in that "upgrade". Perhaps we are seeing something similar develop here? If so, then I'd hang on to what we have now on a separate box, just so you don't feel crippled in FCPX, and keep waiting until FCPX.xx finally obsoletes FCS. The other thought is that this really is the Apple way. What they like to do is to gradually dribble out features (like they did in Logic) over the course of many releases, even though users have been clamoring for those features sometimes for years and years (and competitors have had them for years as well) - by using this strategy, every release has a greater chance of feeling like a "must have" release, than if they just did a release that was basically a maintenance release with some bug fixes (which many feel they did with the last FCP7 that was felt as a "peanuts" kinda release). So in order to avoid the "that's all?!" feel about their releases, they hang onto major features before gradually adding them back in. Frustrating as all heck, but if you are locked into the Apple ecosystem, you don't really have many choices. Bottom line, it shouldn't be too long now for FCPX to be released and we'll then know the score - at that point everyone must evaluate for themselves how that impacts their workflow and decide on what to do about it.

Good points. Color may live on or perhaps OldCorpse is right in that Apple is giving the whole franchise a reboot. Man, the more I think about it the more I'm worried that if it doesn't open older versions then it is DOA for many shops. Many places repurpose older material, update existing projects, and have years and years of older projects archived that get used daily. If FCPX can't open those projects none of those clients can upgrade, save for a 3rd party vendor writing a plugin. Even for individual freelancers, it is nice to be able to open older projects to copy and paste stuff or use old junk as templates. That puts many of us in a bad spot since that basically means serious shops will probably move on to Avid or Adobe and editors will have to follow suit even if we prefer FCPX. Same deal with Vegas. Awesome program that I loved to use, but good luck getting hired as a Vegas editor.

I could see this being Apple's way of ceding the pro fight but winning the bigger prize of selling more seats, though in long term it could be short sighted. If users migrate to Avid, the Apple hardware starts to look like extra overhead vs. the lower cost of PCs. I still prefer the Mac hardware, but there is something to be said for running Avid/Adobe on a nice machine at half the price.

Fingers crossed...

Final Cut Pro does not have Color now, isn't that correct? But it does have color correction tools including the 3-Way tool?

Then i'm confused.

Does the manual you saw Matt cover more than Final Cut Pro X? Or is it just for Final Cut Pro X?

Does it state in the manual that no other previous modules of the Final Cut Studio suite will be released?

And does state that there won't be separate updates for Color, ST, Motion, Cinema Tools, and other now existing components of the suite?

Can you confirm any of this?
