FCPX When?

I was under the impression it would be released June 1st. Guess not. But I'm even more surprised there are no early reviews or articles from some pros who might have had a chance to test it out before the release date. The internet seems to be pretty silent about this software. A google search only results in information from the initial announcement.

My guess is June 30th. I was wanting to hear some news at WWDC too but it doesn't like that's going to happen.

I think it will happen at WWDC. Sure, the highlight and the "stevenote" is OS X Lion, iOS 5, and iCloud but that's the first morning of the first day, and it's expected that those items would take top billing. It's a week long software conference, I am going to guess we'll see the official announcement in some way/shape/form next week at WWDC, with FCP X pegged for release later this month... if I had to guess I would say June 21/22, but that's based on absolutely nothing other than my keen sense of intuition... ;)

Apple retail stores have boxes of "Visual Merchandising" material scheduled to be opened the Tuesday after WWDC starts. Since Lion, iOS 5, and iCloud will not be physical products, but online purchases, I'm sure that's what all that signage will be. That would be an optimal time for Apple to put FCP X online for purchase, also, since it will not be a physical product.

But, it's all 100% speculation until we see it actually ready for purchase, since Apple has not hinted at any date. And Final Cut has never been spoken about at a WWDC before. But then, Apple is now doing things differently than they've done before.

Who knows? And the anxiety continues to build, and the wait continues, and the rumors expand, and more and more of my work (consulting/training) gets put on hold until FCP X is live.

I'm ready to just get it over with. Geez... :Drogar-Thinking(DBG

Just curious as to how you are going to install FCPX on multiple machines (iMac and Macbook Pro)? I'm assuming you wont have to buy it separately for every machine you intend to use it on...or at least I hope you don't have to...

Since it is an App Store purchase, you can install it on the limited number of machines the App Store/iTunes will allow you to activate with your App Store/iTunes account. We will have to wait and see what they allow for FCP X specifically, though. I purchased Pixelmator (suck it PS!) on my Mac Pro, and it allowed me to install it on my MBP, also. Both of which are authorized devices for my App Store/iTunes account. Again, no one will know until it's online.

With Final Cut Studio, technically you had to buy a license for each seat it was on. Personal use allowed you to install on one Desktop and one Laptop, but only using one of them at a time.

Apple's pro apps have always been able to detect license conflicts over networks even when the app on one machine is not actually running.

Thus, the App Store is much more generous than the traditional box-and-dvd method we've been used to.

Can someone please tell me if the June release is only for FCPX or for the rest of the studio apps? Are the other members of studio going to be simultaneously updated to new versions compatible with FCPX, or are those just the same old same old as in the last FCS? Basically, I'm trying to figure out what it'll cost me. Thanks!

Apple has said that only FCP X will be released in June.

In conversations between Apple execs and others backstage after the demo (having been there in person listening to those conversations), it was clear the other apps are alive and well. When their upgrades will be release was NOT stated. Will they be a suite, or a la carte was NOT stated.

The one and only thing ANYONE knows at this point in time is that FCP X will be released via the App Store in June for $299, it is not an upgrade, it is a whole new app.

That's all anyone knows about that.

Here's "parts" of the stage show.

Thanks, BenB. But I guess I don't fully understand - if it's just the same old apps, then I guess it must mean FCPX is 100% compatible with the old apps... how is this all working, if it's supposed to be 64 bit - does it mean only FCPX is? I'm confused as to how FCPX is supposed to be such a revolution written from scratch, but yet 100% compatible with apps that are old and not updated... doesn't sound like much of a revolution. I was expecting all-new apps to go with all new FCPX. Anyway, I guess I'll just wait and see. Thanks for filling in the info, I appreciate it!

The current FCS apps are 32-bit, not 64-bit. None are GCD nor OpenCL aware.

FCP X will be true 64-bit, GCD, OpenCL. The first FCS3 suite app to be released as such.

No one knows anything about the rest of the suite right now beyond that they're still being developed. All we're dealing only with if Final Cut Pro X right now, period. Will it be backward compatible? Speculation. Logic Pro 9 is 64-bit, but backwards compatible. That to accommodate the old 32-bit plugins only. Plugin developers, get on the bus, you knew 64-bit was coming! The days of 32-bit plugins is drawing to a quick close.

Fortunately GCD and OpenCL make rewriting much easier than before, for the savvy developer, in general. Let's see what "scripting" languages FCP X supports, and how. Lots of questions, my friend.

"...if it's just the same old apps" You really don't get it? Really? It's vastly different, no one said anything about backwards compatibility, you're stating things that Apple has not said. Twisting others, total lack of understanding about the three major technologies that will allow FCP X to really out shine the competition.

Read, my friend, and understand.

Nah, if that were true then Reality TV, McDonalds and tapeless video recording wouldn't be so popular.
