C200: FCPX 10.4.9 - "Significant Performance Improvements for Canon Cinema RAW Light"

Can you preview LUTs in CF2?

Not sure what the interface is like anymore, but this drove me nuts not being able to do it before as it was just a list and you weren't able to use arrow keys to quickly flip through looks.

interface has really improved.
The layer module has a LUT layer now. You can stack LUTs and modify opacity to your flavor.
All layer have the option for adding a mask and you can add an image mask for tone improvements

You think you do the same but I assure you you don’t. ;-)

lol. I do.

As great as they can be, those products are for beginners.

You can do everything from scratch in FCP X/Motion vs. almost anything anyone is selling.

The main difference is the 3rd party plugins make it more flexible for you by providing certain controls in one place, or an interface that's easier to understand, or even a workflow that's quicker.

If you shared something more complex and advanced, I'd love to listen - but stacking LUTs and adjusting their opacities, and adding masks?

That is FCP X 101 and I recommend diving more into the software if you aren't aware of the built-in offerings.

Also, FWIW - you know there are a couple dozen of these kind of color plugins from various companies, right?

I do. I tested and mostly paid for a lot of those.
From what you said your experience is from V1.
It’s a big progress since then with easy usability and a lot of
new features. You don’t have to check it if you don’t want to.

Your conclusions about the WB are interesting...nevertheless it all makes sense based on how you work; you make your RAW adjustments first, and then optimize your media for FCP X beforehand, best of both worlds for you.

Just a side note: you can leave your CRL files in place by checking the 'leave files in place' option, which then wouldn't double the size of your library (but you'd lose that ProRes workflow and it's not the 4K you'd like, so it's moot).

I've found I prefer having the original files in the Library...It's just tidier when I have to come back to something, which we do a fair amount. I hate that fcpx builds an optimized file, which it uses for almost everything, and then if an original file goes missing, you get the big red screen...even though the optimized file it's using is...Right. There. Grr. Anyway...to each his own on workflow. I've changed it up many times before...I'll probably change it up many times in the future.

Just sharing this in general...this is how it works:

(1) If FCPX "likes" the file format (i.e. ProRes) then it does not need to create an optimized file if you choose not to have one created. You can "leave files in place" (like on a separate drive) and the library will literally be a few hundred MB (Mega) as there is nothing in it (provided we're just talking about video clips).

(2) If FCPX does not like the file format then it does have to create an optimized file (and this is when the "leave files in place" option is disabled because you have no choice but to import your footage and create optimized files since FCP X doesn't like what you're importing.

And then as far as media management:

If you imported the files/created optimized versions, you will never have any "Missing File" notices (everything is INSIDE the library).

However - and this is where a lot of confusion is and when mistakes happen (that have burned me more than once)...if you "leave files in place" and then delete them, you will lose that connection and will have to re-link them which can get messy if you're looking for all kinds of files in variety of locations (and sometimes they could be gone forever because you think they are inside of FCPX when they are not!).

One very important addition:

If we're not talking about video clips then other assets like photos and music and 3rd party motion graphics/files need to be CONSOLIDATED.

The consolidation feature is the most underutilized feature in FCPX, IMO...because if it's not used then there usually is havoc later.

I don’t store any media in the library because I often use footage in other projects. It’s easier to review it when it’s noting the library. YMMV

Why would storing files in the library affect how you review everything?

Your files will always be where they are externally unless you delete them, so it makes no difference if they are in the library or not unless you specifically would like copies of everything in the library (that's not mandatory).

I mean I hear you because I watch all of my footage with QuickTime and not inside FCP X when I'm working on multiple projects and browsing through clips, but having copies in the library has no effect on how you review all of your media. Totally separate.

.

Because I don’t have to open fcox to review them. KYNO is my favorite tool for that. Also much easier if you want to use them in other applications like resolve or AE

Well, I can see my C200 .CRM files again which is helpful. Not seeing any ability to tweak ISO or White Balance though. Is it just a behind the scenes performance improvement?

No controls for Canon's RAW...just an update to let you use CRM in the newest version of FCP X as it was broken for a few days.

I'm getting "glitches" i.e. skipped frames when importing CRM files directly into FCPX using the new plugin. Canon Cinema Raw Development works fine; so the original files are good. Can anyone confirm this?

Quick question for everyone...when importing CRL into FCPX is it not possible to “leave files in place”? I thought you could offload cards to a drive / raid and then just link them / “leave them in place” but maybe not. I just prefer not having them in the library.

Unless they changed something, you can.

(But I don't think you can when importing from a card.)

I thought so too! But it’s not allowing me to do that. I’m wondering if it’s because my RAID is over Thundrbolt or something? I copied the entire card structure over to a folder on the RAID so I’m wondering if that could be it??

I apologize for what might be a silly question but this is my first long-form RAW project so I’m hoping to do all the edit in FCPX and color in Resolve. I’m not a fast / comfortable with Resolve’s edit functions so FCPX saves a ton of time.

I’ll try to experiment once I’m back in the office...actually out on the second shoot day now and waiting on talent so I thought I would get ahead of it.
