I also read that MOG solution now partner with Apple. Mog solution read the P2 MXF OP ATOM so may be FCP implemented the the MOG solution software for the P2 in FCP 6.

Everybody stop crossing your fingers or you'll JinX it.

I gots a question, though:

Even with native MXF support, how often will you cut straight from a card? I know my own workflow over the past few months n'more has been offloading to a drive because I couldn't --

Wait nevermind. Even then it'd still be native MXF from the external drive, right? =DDDD silly me.

Its official: No native MXF editing in FCP6 :(

"Although it is possible to copy P2 clips in the MXF format directly from a P2 volume to
your scratch disk, you cannot edit MXF-based media in Final Cut Pro. When you transfer
P2 clips using the Log and Transfer window, Final Cut Pro automatically extracts
P2 media from MXF container files and losslessly transfers that media to QuickTime
media files on your scratch disk. You can then edit the QuickTime media files as you
would any other media."

So, absolutely nothing changed as far as this goes between FCP 5 and 6. I think all that Apple did was wrongly use the word "native" editing support which got our hope up.

Bummer.

On the plus side, they did clarify that the unwrapping process was not changing the pixels in any way. Of course they could have this wrong too.

Arghhhhh.

Hi guys!
I know this is an absolute OFF-TOPIC, but since I've seen so many expertise here about MXF handling, that I really want to take my chances to get some answer about an issue that relates to MXF files from a HVX-200's P2 (DVCPro HD 720 30p) to FCP 5.1.4.
As this is my first time [trying] to edit this kind of footage, I just need to know how to "unwrap" the MXF files to a quicktime "friendly" (hopefully DVCPRO HD) codec and then import them into FCP. Is there any SW that specializes on this? Is it any procedure inside FCP that I'm missing?
The files reside (with a complete P2 file structure, e.g.: CONTENTS/AUDIO,CLIPS, ICONS, etc) on an internal Hard Drive.
I've tried importing the entire "CONTENTS" folder, but it seems that FCP can only interpret the Icon's BMP files, nothing else!!!
Once again... I know I'm bothering; distracting and NOT helping anyone on this thread, And I'm so, soooo sorry for that!!!
But I can't think of any other way to get out of this situation, but by asking for help from Those who know best!
Thanx for reading, thanx for helping!!!

No need to "unwrap" the files - FCP will automatically (and losslessly) convert it to the QT format when you import. But you will need the "contents" folder and the "lastclip.txt" file. Just go to files, import, Pansonic P2. Then select the disk or folder that contains your data.

I cut 1080p like it was DV now. Lots of people do it.

Not on my Clunker computer....

Thank you very, very much SumFun!!! You saved my day!!!

Right -- the conversion from MXF to QT is what we call "unwrapping" and "rewrapping". The key point being -- the contents are unchanged. Only the wrapper around the contents. So the underlying video data is not "transcoded", it's not uncompressed and then recompressed, it's copied over absolutely unmodified. It's just placed in a different file format.
