FCP problem

Yesterday I was using FCP to export files and I selected external drive and a particular file and never had to select it again, it was just there. Today FCP insists i select external (instead of Mac HD) and then the specific file. How can I avoid this time consuming task?

More problems! Spent 3 hours filling a file with exported videos. Tried to upload to a stock footage site and it was not in the list of files on my external drive (hidden). Tried to rename the file and all the files inside turned to "ghosts", names there but files not. Finder cannot find the files anywhere, althugh it does find the names. Is there any way to backtrack on a Mac-
to restore the computer to the way it was at 10:01 pm Monday?

Sounds like you may need to run some maintenance. Do you shut your computer down overnight or put it to sleep regularly? The scripts run in the middle of the night, local time to clear out files used by the system to keep track of what you're doing. Try running MacJanitor (freeware: http://www.cclondon.com/infosearch/dynamicPages/WF_ZoneCheck_W.aspx) to see if that helps - it's like the old Rebuild Desktop of older Mac OS. For more on this, see http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/maintscripts.html.
Good luck!

I'm a little unclear - is it better to leave the unit on overnight or turn it off?

RE: the above problem - the missing files magically turned up two days later on the Mac drive. My problem seems to be loosely related to my external FW drive, recently purchased. I have had few problems related to files put on the Mac drive. A previous USB drive also had few problems other than slowness.

Another good tool for Mac maintenance is Onyx...it's free. I run it once a month and have never had a hiccup.

how full is this external drive? 75% full is pushing it. 90% full is bad news.

No offense but are you on top of organizing your files? You probably already know that you need to "eject" that external drive before shutting it down or unplugging it. Once you rename or move files to new or different folders then you need to reconnect those files back to your project. This is probably useless information because you already know this- right?

Not useless info - I know about the "eject" thing, but sometimes the drive does not show up in the sidebar so I can eject it. I know about the 75% thing too, not quite there yet, but will watch it. I did not know, though, that renaming a file could cause a problem - that could be the root of the problem I was having. Thanks for posting.

oh cool. Well there ya go. Manage those files. You can rename a file/clip in FCP and it's fine. If you rename a file say in the scratch folder then yes you will need to reconnect it back to the project. Have you used Project Manager yet? When you're done with a project check it out. It's really simple and keeps everything organized when you archive projects. http://www.lafcpug.org that site is pretty good for FCP issues.
