Can anyone tell me how to use the HVX200 as a mini dv source deck to get mini dv tape footage into final cut and control the hvx200 via final cut so that we can log then import clips into FCP?
I have an inteil dual core Mac Pro running FCP version 5.1.4
Make sure your HVX is in DV tape mode by using the switch on the back (to the left of the battery).
Hit the button on the back to amke sure you're in VTR mode (and not camera mode).
Hook your HVX to yoru MAC via firewire.
Open FCP, and make sure your sequences are set to DV NTSC 48k.
Under 'VIEW' choose 'Refresh A/V devices'
This should ensure that your computer connects with the cam.
Open Log and Capture (under File)
The computer should recognize the camera and allow you to control it via FCP.
Not necessarily - I used to Log and capture all the time - simply logged the entire tape as one giant clip - that way at least I had the timecode to be able to batch capture from if I had to, but saved wear and tear on the gear.
Yeah, granted it's not ideal to have 60 min long clips on your system - but you can always media manage the project when you're finished, and it still leaves you the ability to batch it if need be in the future. Of course you'd have to batch full tapes - but I think it's worth it.
What's funny is I wound up working that way out of a lack of time - not because I thought it was a good workflow. I was working at a TV station, and didn't have any time to log footage - so I would just set in and outs for the entire tape, and leave it to capture when I went out to shoot something else.
