FCP 7: AVCHD support finally?

They could add this as a update after they release snow leopard. From what I hear AVCHD .MTS files play in quicktime player nativity in snow leopard. Hopefully they have thumbnails!!

Not a big deal IMO. It does have native AVC-Intra support so my guess is they are targeting the "Pro" market with that one. Transcoding to ProRes is super fast on a newer Mac and now supposedly even faster and HD's are so cheap these days I'm cool with it. I'm more excited about the $299 upgrade!!!! Now I just need to get an Intel Mac lol!

yeah i don't mind the transcode times, doesn't bother me really. i would like native support for doing breaking news stuff at work. but usually i transcode on the way back to the office or something. i just hope they fix some of the transcode issues that i and a lot of other users are having with weird blocks showing up in their footage.

It looks very interesting... and you only need 10.5.6 to run it, so even Leo users can work with it.
One thing i have to say is about Blu-Ray support, is there but not alot of details about it. I'm guessing the menus for Blu-Ray are going to be very basic, Hope that gets fix on an update

They also added a few more setting for transcoding to ProRess (even proxy is there)

Will order mine ASAP!!!

Wow, a double-barrel shot to the foot. First, it sounds to me like Apple will never support Blu-Ray because they want to skip the format. CS3 supports it. Now AVC-HD is not supported w/o at bulky and time-intensive transcode. CS4 supports it.

I switched to FCS2 from Vegas and the PC world. It looks like I need to switch again since I had to learn Encore for Blu-Ray purposes. It will save me $$ in software over time I guess. So many things about FCS2 are counter-intuitive, I might like the CS4 suite better.

I agree with Lee, I think that it will be natively working with AVCHD when Snow Leopard comes out...I'm just excited that they released this now and not in September or October. I didn't see anybody with this on the Radar...Already ordered my copy, it will be here Monday.

I really would love native support, but i don't really think is going to happen... Apple is been using the transcode method for AVCHD, XDCAM, P2 (anything file base basically) and if they were planning on native AVCHD they wouldn't have the new ProRes flavors (4444, LT, Proxy)

I hope am wrong because i would really like AVCHD native editing (but without the big performance hit like the other software tittles out there)

gonna take a visit to the apple store today and do a test transcode on a clip thats been giving me issues with the crappy blockyness thingy.

Having no real upgrade to DVDSP and limited blu ray capability is a real kick in the bollocks. I think they did the cheaper price due to this... I mean, there's limited incentive for someone to upgrade, besides the price. Now, if they had true blu ray support, well then that might be something. The burners are cheaper now, and the media is down to less than 4 bucks so... what's the happs?

Jobs does want eveything to go through iturnes and rule the world.

just read that the new proress files are not playable in fcp6.

I just installed FCP7 on a MBP and transcoded to ProResLT

Then transfer the files to a G5 PowerMac running FCP6.0.5 and the file plays back fine... even put the clip on the timeline and was able to play it fine (on an SD timeline)

I also transfer the file to an Intel Quad Running FCP6.0.5 and the clip looks white in the viewer and once dropped on the timeline i get a red screen saying "Codec could not be opened"

So i guess my answer is YES and NO

I will be updating the Quad to FCS3 so that should fix that problem for me, and the G5 could stay as-is!
