FCP 24pA

When importing footage from my DVX100B shot in 24p Advanced, how do I remove the 2:3 pulldown and what type of timeline do I put the clips in? I have FCP 5.

when you capture 24pa footage you capture with the advance 2:3:3:2 pulldown.
when you bring up the capture window hit the seeting (I think) and it should be set at "DV NTSC 48KHz" so just change that to "DV NTSC 48KHz Advace 2:3:3:2 Pulldown"
then you edite on a 23.97 timeline.
good luck andy!

I was in the FCP forum and I saw someone say to just capture the footage and then select the clips and go to to Tools>Remove Advanced Pulldown and then just drag them in a 23.97 timeline and render. Is there a difference between doing that and your method?

That the way that captain mench does it, but I just set all of my project settings before I import. Make it a 23.98 timeline, 23.98 advanced pulldown removal capture and edit the sumbitch. Some of those dude give you round about ways of doin simple stuff. your sequnce has to agree with your cature settings. I always do a quick 3 second capture and put it in the sequecne. If it needs to be rendered that mean you ****ed up, if not, do work.

wow that has a lot of typos.

I got it all imported flawlessly, but then I almost killed myself because it was for a movie for some 6th graders at a school, and one of them begged to hold my camera and he seemed pretty mature so I let him hold it and somehow he went into my menu and turned on 30p. He had no idea what he was doing so the last 4 or 5 shots were in 30p. Somehow it is still working fine though!

If you had shot in 24p (as opposed to 24pA) then that would be the way to do it.

FCP has a capture setting especially for 24pA which, as the guys said, is the "24p (23.98) Advanced Pulldown Removal" setting.

If you had shot in 24p, you would just capture with normal DV NTSC and then use Cinema Tools to remove the 2:3:2:3 pulldown. The method you mentioned there is the shortcut to do that from within FCP.

You would not want to use "Remove Advanced Pulldown" on 24p standard footage. The pulldown cadence will be wrong.

Something weird happened to me today... I imported some 24pA footage to FCP today and then when I went to remove the advanced pulldown, it did not find it in the footage. I then proceeded to import into my 23.97 timeline only to find my footage needing to be rendered. I went ahead and did it, but when it completed, it is terribly interlaced! Very weird horizontal lines on fast motions... What should I do!!!!!???

If you used the "Advanced Pulldown Removal" capture setting, the pulldown would have been removed at capture. What version of FCP do you use?

Your absolutely sure the footage was 24pA?

What capture settings did you use in FC?

In the browser, in Final Cut, what is the Frames Per Second of your captured clips?

It was for sure 24pA... the frame rate on the timeline is 23.976... I did not set any specific capture settings.. How do I do that?

Well, the first issue here is that you don't know for sure what setting was used for this footage. I don't know how to determine that. Somebody in here will. I'm sure a search will find something....

Found this. Shuttle down to Noah's reply about how to determine if you have 24p or 24pA.

Also, if you know for sure that you have 24pA footage (advanced) then here is how you could capture it. The guys who posted earlier did explain it though.

In Final Cut; under Final Cut Pro (top left, next to the Apple) click and select 'Easy Setup'.

Choose 'DV-NTSC 24p (23.98) Advanced Pulldown Removal'

Open up a NEW project. If you don't do this, the above selections will not take affect.

Select 'Log and Capture'

On the right hand side of the Log and Capture window that opens up there are three tabs. The third one is 'Capture Settings'. Click on this tab and confirm that the 'Capture Input' drop down menu is showing 'DV-NTSC 24p (23.98) Advanced Pulldown Removal'.

You can now import and FC will remove the 2:3:3:2 pulldown during capture.

Your sequence preset needs to be 23.98 but in FCP5 I can't recall when you select that.
