STATUS ------------ Complete!!!!! PREMIERING and Distribution and Marketing.

I've been working on this film for 13 months and couldn't wait to post something here about it. There's so much to tell but I'll have to just give a hint and a few teaser screen grabs for now.

Title - Fathoms Deep
Tag Line - "There's No Such Thing As Good Guys"
Full Length Stylized Crime Movie
I rented guns from Doc at Indy Arms

General Info.
Production Shoot days - 16
Locations - 14 with 22 different setups
Crew - 3
Actors - 23
Shot on HVX and SGBlade in Los Angeles and the Mojave Desert
Budget <$5,000 ...... <so far> .... < + post production>

Fathom's Deep. It's a comical yet thrilling look inside the life of two partners in crime, "Hicks" and "Cash". They're mere puppets in a twisted lineup of crime lords and "not quite so right in the head" villains, doing their best to stay afloat as they've fallen victim to a deal gone bad. They now have to wait out the storm with a less than appealing safety man "Pox", while opposing crime boss "Big Lou" has them hunted down.
Will they make it out just in time, or is there even a way out? There's no such thing as Good Guys.

Please ask questions or leave comments. I'll be finished with principal photography this following week. After which, I'll add a teaser and some more info.

Cheers,

Zack

FathomsDeep_Final_done_3.jpgA short teaser for the film

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=peqEIGhR9wQ

We shot in almost 30 locations (Probably closer to 20. Some we used multiple parts of) Had a huge cast of 22 actors and broke a lot of the no-budget first time filmmaker rules. We had gunshots and car crashes.

Equipment
We had my camera Package (Hvx200a with SGBlade and pentax lenses) with tripod and DIY dolly. A very nice sound mixer with a Rode NTG-3 shotgun mic and boom and a 3 piece lighting kit consisting of 650w redheads and some gels.

I rushed the script out in two weeks because another movie we were working on got canceled. HOWEVER I think it's one of the best things I've written. It was good enough to convince almost 30 people to jump on board. We shot in three day segments for a two weeks and had two extra pick up days. (Not including B-roll)

We cast of Actors Access and held readings at CAZT studios in Hollywood. Location scouting in Lancaster almost got us shot.... SERIOUSLY!!!! My producer got bit on her hip by a German Shepard. But we found useable locations for pretty cheap.

While backing up the footage, my producers computer crashed and we lost 3 days of footage. With some data recovery software I was able to obtain all but 1/2 a card back. Still have to go re-shoot or animate two scenes. Overall I think the film turned out great.

Since I was acting as well as shooting and directing and producing, we had a few compromises and close calls as well as some out of focus shots while someone else took the camera but I've just finished a rough edit of the film and am content with all the content.

Tag Line : There's No Such Thing As Good Guys
Synopsis : Cash and Hicks, Two package runners for the mob botch a job and end up on the run. Their boss sends some muscle to take care of them while a competing mob boss sends his goons, Gaz and Bandages, to "take care of them."
Cash and Hicks end up hiding in the mojave desert under the watchful eye of the sadistic Pox.
The waring factions all come together in a bloody shootout and our package boys are left with a choice. Continue on with their life of crime or get out before they end up over their heads. Turns out they were always in too deep. Fathoms Deep.

This is the overlook scene. Cash and Hicks are reminiscing about life before they were criminals. Cash is regretful. Hicks is bitter. The theme of the scene is "Misery Loves Company"

Welcome To The Safehouse Scene.
I'm about halfway through the rough edit of the film. Lots of long hours and computer time. I can't wait to shoot my next film. Lol. Do you guys have any questions? I feel I should be doing more than just puting up screengrabs.

Our sound is top notch and the video quality is good. Would be nice to have had a few more lights on hand.

This scene shows Pox Amber Hicks and Cash arriving at the safehouse up in the desert. Cash and Hicks are NOT happy to be here.

Most of my characters in the film.

I can't get into photoshop right now to put their names on but I'm in the mood to post an update for you all. The goal is to put these below and a couple more into a large mosaic poster for the film. Maybe I'll make a bunch of promo flyers with these pictures and just the characters names and Film title on them to be passed out along the way. Theres sooooooo many actors in this movie and they all have decent parts in the film. I'm wondering how this is all going to come together. I was aiming at making a Guy Ritchie'esk movie with loads of characters and a revolving story line. I hope we've done an effective job. Here's a few of the baddies....

Amber- Pox's Girl
Mystery Woman- Cash's Lifeline
Dregs - Protagonist Mob Boss
Hicks- Package Runner and Cash's Partner
Moses- The guy with 7 Fingers(thanks to Gaz and Bandages)
Natasha- Lue's Unappreciated Eye Candy
Pox- The Babysitter
The Russian- "Hey, I'm just a guy out in the desert with a shovel."
The Goon- Lue's Hired Hand
Ulysses- The bouncer

Thanks ND. It's been a wild one for sure. I just got through a rough edit of 90 % of the film but I expect it'll probably be until Christmas before it's DONE and done.

The film is looking like it will have a runtime of 82 minutes. I feel like this is appropriate as there is no name actors and we didn't spend a million dollars making it. Short, sweet and to the point. I'm confident no one will be checking their watches while viewing the film.

After a long 7 week break on the Kavadba Roadtrip, I'll be returning to Los Angeles to finish editing, reshoot/b-roll and sound design this puppy. Wish me luck!!!

Come on now fellas, 1,000 views and 2 comments??? Anybody have a question/comment/suggestion/encouragement?

It's not easy keeping the excitement going on DVXuser when no one seems to care about the updates.

What do you guys think of the trailer?

I don't know why nobody's is commenting in your thread. Must be a bunch of hoverers. LOL! I watched the trailer and I think it's decent, but could be better. First let me say that your title at the end is killer. Excellent job on that - I thought that was top-notch. In the trailer itself I though, you had some pretty good shots in there, but the acting seemed not believable in several parts. I think the way you can fix that with the trailer is to shorten up some of the people's lines. I think if you do a trailer (not a teaser) like you've done then you have to really put some serious emotion in there or some hard action. Some of the good shots that you have in this trailer stand out pretty good. The woman walking out of the pool, the shadow of the guy about to get shot and the slow motion of the guy with the mo-hawk walking. I think if you put more compelling shots in and cut away from the shadow of the gun and guy's head sooner it would make it shine more.

You get big props for getting a feature film done. That's a huge accomplishment! I can tell you're working hard and you should be proud.

It happens a lot actually, people look but don't respond. It's been said people feel their opinions won't be considered. I just saw the trailer myself and was driven to comment. It was pretty sweet. But how'd you get the song? "Black Betty". I mean it works real well for it, but how'd you get the rights to it? My complaint is the trailer should've been cut tighter after the singing started. Right after the line "Black Betty had child" there's a bass thump, those are action beats. Action needs to be happening every thump. This is the best example that comes to mind:

When ever the singer say "Youuuu" there an action hit, even if it's just speeding cars. (Sorry, I've been studying action trailers). I don't if your film is more action or drama, but it may help. And when there's dramatic dialogue the music just drops down then comes back up. It doesn't have to be cut that way exactly but a song like that can really help and if you cut to the beat I think it would be tighter.
