Fat Gecko car mount (great) doubles as awesome gunstock stabilizer!

I just got my delkin devices fat gecko car mount last week and have already gotten some cool shots with it. It's way more stable with way less vibration than my single suction cup GPS mount, and the adjustable arm (two ball and sockets mounted on two pivots with cutouts for 90º angles, all tightened with two knobs) makes it great to position in interesting places.

As an added bonus I realized it makes a wonderful gunstock chest type stabilizer, similar to the zacuto target shooter. When you tighten everything down there is no play at all (a must for a car mount to limit vibration) and you can position everything perfectly with the arm so the camera's viewfinder goes to your eye and the dual suction cups go to your chest/shoulder area. I can get very very stable static and decently stable moving shots with it, and it relieves tons of stress on my arm (I could shoot for hours like this) all for $70! It's really uncanny how close it reminds me of the target shooter and other similar setups in this configuration, and on top of that can be used as a car mount (its intended purpose!) I've used the zacuto rigs and I'd say this gets you 90% there in terms of results (although it's less convenient) and I actually found it a bit more comfortable. It's heavier, but a lot of the weight is absorbed by your shoulder when you push it in. The two suction cups act as pads, and can be rotated to fit your shoulder.

Normally I would hold the camera with two hands but did it with one here so you could see.

Here is a project I shot with it. Check out some of the shots and how stable they are (some aren't as stable as they could be but the whole time I was really running and gunning not focusing on my breathing and getting steady shots.) My favorite shot is at 1:13, the camera move there would not be achievable with naked handheld on a compact camera like this.

That's a great idea! Would it be possible for you to post a photo of someone operating in the gunstock configuration?

I will in the morning when there's enough light to take one with my macbook camera, or possibly when i run into an SLR toting friend.

Ah, you and your gunstock shooters! Seriously, that's very cool. I too would like to see a pic of it in gunstock mode as well as some car footage.

Ben I have one of those - not sure Id fly it solo as a car mount though, good for attaching the camera to things in high, tight spaces though.

With a camera as light as the Gh1 it's really not a problem. I also have a very long camera strap that I can unclip from one side and secure to the car, or through a window, in a door, etc. Also using it for shots inside a car.

Here is a car mount shot I got with it (in the rain, I like to push my gear to its limits :)) with not post stabilization or anything. Was playing with color grading so just ignore it if you find that distracting:

When I go to vimeo it says: Sorry, you do not have permission to watch this private video.

Anyway I can see it? I want to get one of these.

Thanks

Im anxious to see how it works as a gunstock mount... i like the idea of killing two birds with one stone - but am not convinced by the pictures of the item as to how configurable it might be.

Here's a sample shot using the mount as a gunstock style support. I just picked one at random from raw footage that I am transcoding right now, filmed some random run and gun stuff on halloween in downtown Santa Cruz. I wasn't really thinking about or trying to make shots like this stable, it just sort of turned out that way. Look at the upper right corner if you want to keep track of movement. Beginning is a little shakier then middle and end.

Private video.

Works for me when not logged in. It's hidden from vimeo.com but is supposed to be allowed on dvxuser. Is there something screwy with the way dvxuser handles embeds? Anyway it plays for me and other videos I've done like this have played. Try it again?

Still not working for me. The embedded player says "Sorry. The creator of this video has not given you permission..." When I click the video it opens Vimeo and says "Private Video". We have some weird filtering at work, but I can see other Vimeo content.

Here's another one I've been looking at... Gripper 3025 for $99 bucks but gets pretty good reviews. Doesn't look like it would have the ability to double as a stabilizer but thats not a biggie for me. Here's a video I found that someone else tested.
