fastest way to offload p2 card and burn dvd

I shoot sports on Hvx-200p and use mini dv tape presently. I want to use the p2 card now and want to know the fastest way to offload p2 card into g5 with final cut on it and get it to toast or dvd studio to burn a DVD of the game as soon as possible and want it in mpeg -2 format for the end user...the coaches.

The only way i know how presently is to hook up my hvx-200 with firewire and import p2 footage or data into final cut pro....at that point since i dont need to do any editing I want to just burn a dvd in mpeg 2 but am presently forced to use compressor or quicktime and then import it into toast or dvd studio pro.

Does anyone know of any software for mac or any hardware that would help eliminate using compressor or qiucktime conversion ?? thanks in advance for any advice on this subject.:dankk2:

It depends on your final delivery needs. If you simply need a DVD for the coaches, without garnish, get one of those DVD Recorders with a firewire/RCA input. It make take some tinkering, and frankly, the quality of those is pretty weak compared to the control you get from DVD Studio Pro, but if you need it fast, thats the easiest, fastest was to go. Unless anyone has any better ideas...

Yup that would be my suggestion otherwise it would be copy, ingest, compress, author- not fast at all.

Thanks to both of you who responded to my post. I have had it suggested before ,regarding the dvd burner on site ,but was afraid of the fire wire pulling out and also the pausing during the game .....could the dvd recorder attached to my HVX 200 start and stop the firewire attached dvd recorder?

You may have misunderstood the responses.

Once you've recorded the game, THEN you play out FW to the DVD recorder.

You can't record live to the recorder during the game.

Thanks for responding...I was under the impression when one shoots on the P2 card in standard Definition that you have to offload it in final cut pro (which is the system I have (G5). At that point I was coverting it to a quicktime file and at that point I was able to either burn it in DVD studio Pro or toast. Are you suggesting that I can Hook up the HVX-200p directly via firewire to my newly purchased Lacie D2 dvd burner and burn the contents of what is captured on my P2 card ? That would be great If I could do that....exactly how ...after i attach the firewire ....do I do that?

There is a difference between a DVD recorder and a DVD burner.

Burning a data disc with a DVD burner is different than playing video out a camcorder via firewire or S video and recording the video to the DVD in DVD format. The first is copying data files, not video.

You need to research both. Not many DVD recorders have firewire connectors.
