Fashion shoot filmed with Canon 7D

I hear you, Kholi, I'd just like to get a bit more of the "constructive" in "constructive criticism." To tell someone to "invest in some originality" comes across the wrong way.

At least the guy who made the "get a tripod" comment made an actual suggestion as to how the OP could make his work "better."

Yeah I wasn't talking about Commanderspike. I didn't see his comment until after I posted. What he posted was just silly, but y'know...

But right, there's a nice thread by Jack Daniel Stanley in the fest forum on how to leave criticism. Might have to duplicate it so that people get the gyst of how it goes. Less I release the Stephen to devour thy thigh fat.

Don't invest in a tripod, invest in some originality :violent5:

Unless the client expects a certain style, what's the point of copying what's 'popular'?

Nice video just didn't hold my interest. Fast forwarded at 0:20 to see if they got naked. Sorry if my honesty offends you

It's at this point that I begin to TRULY believe you don't think before you post.

"Shaky camera crap"? wow. Did I offend you? lol. I disagree. I'm not sure if you've seen any fashion videos recently, but this handheld style is very popular right now. In fact, the photographer, model, and client were "blown away".

second. I love the handheld work.
What a lame comment.

With the influx of new members these cheap cameras bring in, there should be an eligibility quiz before newcomers are allowed to post :D

Liked the footage a lot. Even for a non-graded rough-cut it was a fun watch (I'll admit - I scrubbed a little). I liked the progression from day to night. Glad to hear you have happy clients!

It's ok if you scrubbed :') The length pays homage to the fan service that those who wanted it needed... if that makes sense. But thank you very much for watching!

Invest in originality!? What? First of all, I do own an extremely nice fluid head and sticks. In fact, I started shooting on sticks, but I pulled it off to capture the energy of the shoot. IN FACT Mr. Original, I did look online for inspiration for this video, but I found nothing. I do enjoy Nautica videos, but they typically are a lot less shakey, SOOOO that being said, do your research before you call someone unoriginal. LOL. I dare you to go online and find a high fashion video that looks like mine and share. And I also dare you to show me something you've made that IS ORIGINAL LOL. Jesus Christ!

Why so hostile reaction to criticism? It's only my opinion after all and I am allowed to express it. Should have posted some constructive comments but didn't have time. It was meant to be taken with a grain of salt anyway.

Yeah, I should stick to the maxim "if you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all"

But you gotta speak your mind dude.... I apologise for not being more constructive first time around it was rudely phrased but meant tongue in cheek.

I am also doing a fashion shoot tomorrow night in England.

When I post the vid I don't expect everybody to like it. But hey, on the internet of all places, people have to have a thick enough skin to accept a bit of lame-assed flippantly and honest expressions of one's own prejudices / likes / dislikes.

Constructive criticism, yeah totally agree, but it's only ever gonna be totally subjective. Okay here goes:

- The whip pan at 0:19 has a lot of jello, try to hide jello or work around it, not draw attention to it. Sometimes it can even work creatively in your favour.
- When the music (which unfortunately I also don't like) 'hits' and goes up tempo at 0:23 the shot which follows that should have some impact but instead it's a dark black shot of a lighting unit. Would have liked it better if it had a wow factor at that point where the music goes into it's stride.
- Really like the location, it's amazing. Shots of outside from high up at 0:45 are great. But then I'd take the repeating shots out. At 1:00 the building shot is in there twice from a slightly different focal length, it just didn't work for me. Why the repetition? It doesn't fit, doesn't fit to the music, doesn't look like its there for style. It just looks unedited.
- There is no interaction between the camera lens and the models. I know that's because the models are concentrating on posing for the photographer guys, but it makes the viewer feel like an outsider and they can't 'get into' the video or the mood of the shoot.
- From 1:55 I like it better, the night light and the location are shooting situations any film maker would be envious of. Like I say the location is stunning.
- But again there is not enough variety in the shots, in my humble opinion. It can't hold my attention.
- Favourite shot is at 3:32 with the sweeping camera motion down toward the model on the stage, and the final shot too - looks good with the steadicam motion.
- Overall I didn't like the video because I didn't feel it was well shot or edited. But I should've kept quiet and realised that some people don't understand my humour. Scrubbing through to see if there was any nakedness :) It was a joke. (No actually it's the truth). I can see the look you aimed for, it's just not the kinda thing I enjoy at 4 mins at a time.

Have I made things even worse yet?

Hey look on the brightside of life. -2 dislikes and +6 likes. The liking guys are in the majority.

Being from an industrial city in Northern England I like my films to have a gritty moody impact about them, and if I'm watching pretty people lounge around in an LA skyscraper I get bored really quickly unless there is some rhyme or reason to it or something really special about the camera work.

one of the best videos Ive seen from the 7D......

haha, thanks for the compliment! I laugh because every good video I see with the 7D, someone always claims that. Go to vimeo and "search people" then enter "bob nicholas" (or just go to bobnicholas.com). This guy has amazing videos, and I beleive he's shooting with the 5Dmk2 and the 7D.

Still don't get the hostile response. Anyway, since you asked here are my favourite 5D fashion vids. I don't need to research when there are videos with girls like these in them on Vimeo. It comes automatically

(Camera movement a little shaky, bordering on terrible - but shows how a great rapport between lens and model improves the video)

Brilliant use of the wide angle lens in that one.

And hey, remember, this isn't the MTV Music Video awards. I'm not Kayne West stealing your special moment. Just sharing my opinion and suggesting some other shooting styles to experiment with, so stop being a cry baby Taylor!!!!! :crybaby:

Yeah, I'm gonna have to disagree, and but you served to reinforce my point that none of these are replicas of mine, so mine is indeed original! Thanks mate! And my name isn't Taylor?? lol

What the hell? If by "other shooting style" you mean an unapologetic boobfest, then just say it.

Actually, you already did...

Really? So when I criticize a badly shot in the woods music video is rude and when you do the same thing or worst is ok? I am tired of that double standard. So lets all get together on the same page and call a video crap when it should deserve it right? That's freedom of expression, correct?

Hahah, I know! My wife and I watched all those video that Spike shared (she's my AC), and we we're like... uhhh so naked women is the answer? The Ralph Lauren one was OK, but was surprised that it was Ralph Lauren at all.

ps. thanks for the support. yeah, honestly, I wish there was a way, as the creator of the thread, to ban someone from posting, or remove a posting altogether.

Yeah really!

The message is not in what you say, but how you say it.

I think you don't need to say "it's crap" because that's actually not criticism. With a comment like that you lower yourself. I think the target audience on this board are professionals. Try to keep that in mind and express your opinion like a professional, even when you think the footage is "amateuristic".

However when someone behaves like an ass, I'd not try to attack too. Results in a wasted thread like this one :-)

For what it's worth I really liked the handheld shots and the colors. You grabbed the moment like shooting photos, really nice. I liked the building shots as well, however it didn't really fit in with the footage at the beginning.

(Excuse me, I'm Dutch so I lack the finesse of the English language to express my opinion)

So true. Thanks for the advice and the wonderful comments. I wouldn't have guessed you weren't English speaking!
