F5: F5 half the price. Is Sony releasing new models soon??

if there is anyone out there who wants to sell me their F5 or FS7 for half price, I would be more than happy to take it off your hands.

Please PM me. Many and sincere thanks.

Even at half price, which is insulting, (i.e.. $10k USD for Body and VF) I'm still torn looking at brand new FS5 or used FS7.

A smaller body would offer something different than the F5 form factor. I'm even entertaining an A7sii for $4000.

Too many damn Sony options.

Also $1 USD cost me x1.3 right now which is awful.

Thats the thing as I said early in the thread.

To a solo op, with cheap glass, and nodesire to break 200mbs data loads the F5 is a worse camera than an FS7,

No speedbooster poor XLR position, etc

Solo opping is the core of my business.

I would not swap the 5 for my personal FS7.

Next week Im back on my satellite show.. with rented CN17 zoom, timecode jam, multi-cam, Teradek . I have been begging to go to the F5 because the form of the 7+back box does not work for me.

Different tools for different jobs. Not many are doing the latter job so not many need the F5.

Also on the big job.. all the kit is rental anyway (I could not offer them a pakage including the CN17 zoom) so.. well my ownership of cameras doesnt matter. And I think the ProdCo or whoever pulls the strings thinks the 7 is the cool camera of now!

The more i sniff around the bigger jobs the more it becomes sensible to only own a light meter. (incidentally the WFM on my personal 502 is our 'light meter')

I have no problem single oping my F55, for me this would be a 2nd camera for b-cam operating on jobs I seem to be getting more of. But I think the diversity of having a different form factor from my F55 would server me better, again just as an alternative option or project requirement.

But if I got an F5 at a steal price, like $8k which some have been seen at, then I would think long and hard because hands down the F5 is a better camera than FS7 even with a cheap budget lens or for solo op'ing in my opinion. At least I've never had issues solo op'ing my F55..

FS5 looks damn sweet.

If I had a 55 id been keen on a matched pair and lockit boxes.

If you need to travel light even losing a vlock charger is a boon.

EU air travel is a pain, I fly with a Thinktank and a sticks bag.. every cubic cm counts and for that the FS7 wins.. the FS5 would win more!

Also Im addicted to my 28-85 and booster, 2nd best lens after a CN17 :)

I shot with two F55's that didn't match so after that what's the difference if I intercut an A7 or FS5 with an F55.. like they say fix it in post. In controlled environment it's not going to be horrendously different. I've matched GH2 to F3 in the past, anything is possible.

What bugs me about A7sii is 30 minute max record time, that is bollocks as you brits would say for interview shooting.

The thing about shooting with two cameras similar is..

1) lockit box jam

2) genuine freedom to not choose between A and B, where B is bad - Red and Blue cams.

When Im FS7/GH4 the GH4 just ends up getting left in the bag or shooting a bunch of guff that I often dont even look at in the edit!

I've been shooting with a C100 for the last month and I really miss my FS7. The C100 is sticky.

FS5 looks sweet but the compromised codec and gradeability makes it a no-no. It's like anyhow you look upon it the FS7 comes out on top each time.

advantage of the F5.. sound guys I have worked with, with SD.. have said no need for lock it box .. as the F5 holds TC pretty well.. .. one less thing hanging off the camera.. speaking of which I just got a TV logic VFM 580.. highly recommend..

Agree with the above.. The FS5 I think is too small.. no cine EI.. etc.. I wonder that a DSLR is just as good or better..?

If they release a F65 spec'ced camera for double the price of a URSA Mini 4.6K kit, that would be weird. But I guess they have more prestige?
URSA Mini 4.6 is 12 MPX in 16:9. DVX 200 is 13, A7RII is 15, F65 is 17.6. The problem with A7RII is a fairly slow readout of its sensor, which makes it unsuitable for the fast moving objects and, naturally, the recording bit rate is very low too.

And BMD cameras are, at the moment, deemed to be the "indie shooter" types rather than a Sony/Red/Canon/ARRI/Panasonic that can be used on a high end project.

Just an opinion, but I think there is a whole lot of wishful thinking in there :) The fs7 is a GREAT value for single operators but it doesn't hold a candle to the operational ability of its older siblings, nor does the quality of its RAW signal(Sony made damn sure of that).
Right but the replacement will be priced higher than FS7, probably at double the retail.

One thing about Sony over the last couple of years is that they're not afraid to make a "giant leap for the mankind" gear. All its shortcomings aside, think how much of a bargain FS-7 has been compared to what was there before it.

Wasn't it more a case of "we need to completely wipe out the threat to our market share from the C300"?
which of course... it has!

The premise of the op is "F5 half the price. New models soon?" Then read his post, because it's half price used. Well ahem, okay but to me the topic is bait and switch. Then your comment the F65 that everyone who bought one took a huge loss on it. I would love to buy one of these misery priced losers. Where are they?

About a a year ago there were a lot of F65s on the market for about 35K to a low of 25K. Sony sold the F65 in a package with one reader and one card for $85K, lots of buyers were in for about $95 to $100K.

Otto Nemenz sold a lot of theirs off through an outfit in LA called System Associates, they were listed on Ebay. If you ask around you can usually find one for about $25-28K now.

F65 is an AWESOME camera, especially for the money as they are valued now. But those people took huge losses on them. More than once I almost turned my 55 into a 65. But you can't use it on every job, and that's ultimately what deterred me.

If you mean, Alexa65 space, which is ~ $300,000 as based on its rental fees, then I would agree. But I would place a small wager that a medium format cinema camera from Sony will be out soon enough and priced more in line with F65 than with Alexa65.

No, I meant Alexa XT space, which is apples to apples.

But they also "shocked the world" with the A7S/II and A7RII lines. And, even at a low end, you can now get APS-C A6000 for $400.

XT is still a 4.6 MPX sensor in 16.9. It delivers a great 422 1080P signal but the world is moving on to 4/6/8K cameras and, at worst, a 4K TV. ARRI will either join the movement or be left out in the cold. It has a mega-priced and largely unavailable 65mm model. Sony should be able to match it soon and for a lot less to boot.

Canon/Nikon is still riding on it's reputability in photo market but I'll give a maximum of another year or maybe two. If they won't innovate everyone (even hardcore Canikon lovers) will just move on. It's not only bodies but lenses as well- almost every photographer I know have (or is talking about) Sigma lenses- half price, better IQ. Sony and a lot of other manufacturers are spitting out new e-mount lenses like machine gun so this "but Canon lenses..." will diminish completely.

Not really. Sigma lenses have great IQ, but their build quality is an issue, especially where the motors are concerned. The reason people buy Canon is that they are pretty tough in the field and the L series is weather sealed and legendary in terms of it's image quality. To date Canon has sold 110 Million lenses. That's a lot in the field. There is a reason most sigma lenses come in either a Canon or a Nikon mount. But I don't see any Canon lenses in a Sigma mount. Sony has been doing a great job of innovating. But this is not only their strength, it is also their weakness. Aside from the F5/55, their cameras don't have anywhere near the same retention of value or length of market cycle as Canon. People here have been announcing the demise of Canon and Nikon for a long time. However, the reality is that videographers are a drop in the see compared to the number of photographers and we should not take our experiences as a real indicator of where the rest of the market is at for these companies.

The photography market is being destroyed by the smartphones. Once the multiple sensor/multiple lens cameras with the interpolating software come out, the image quality will inch even closer to the DSLR's. The enthusiasts and the pros will move to the full frame and the medium format (Fuji is allegedly working on a competitively priced MF model, that is priced below Pentax 645Z, currently retailing for $7,000 body only) but the bulk of casual users will be more than content with their selfie sticks. The pro video market, aside of the big budget TV/feature production, will also be satisfied with a sub-$3,000 shooting package. And then photo/video will become what a high end audio industry has become over the last twenty years or so - a small niche product that is sold in hundreds of thousands rather than tens of millions. In other words, Samsung saw the writing on the wall and quit the biz, thereby beatings others to the punch.
