F5: F5 half the price. Is Sony releasing new models soon??

So I have noticed that a bunch of used F5's have been going on sale for less than half the cost of a new one? What gives? Is Sony releasing it's replacement soon? Or have the FS7's forced the prices of the F5's down?

The reason I ask is because a cinematographer that I work with ask me if I wanted to buy his Sony F5 for 8K.

Respectfully,
Leo

An F5 for 8K? I think I'd be jumping all over that. Pretty sure anyone that knows, can't say
anything about any new release. Not sure exactly where a new camera would fit in Sony's
lineup.....

The cameras will be 3 years old in March 2016. Leases are coming up, and those who made money from them have less concern of trying to sell for 30% lower than retail. Also the exchange rate fluctuations can make for lower sale prices depending…

Regardless of that, there is no replacement on the horizon. Sony has said this repeatedly, I think we will not see a replacement model for the next 3-4 years and even if we do what the heck will it have that matters at this point?

cheers,

Thanks for the info!

I couldn't find anything in regards to a replacement for the F5 or F55 but was surprised that they were selling for a low price (used). The cinematographer that I work with has made his money back from the camera and plans to upgrading to the F55, hence, I could understand why he would sell it for 8-10K.

Respectfully,
Leo

The 5 and the 7 are different cameras - to some extent the 7 is more appealing to the solo op looking to shoot with a speedbooster and not needing raw - it's lighter and more nimble - cheaper batts - better headphone jack, xlrs nicely angled

the 5 is excellent with pl glass and TC jam - higher end jobs - but the file is the same as the 7 basically

i think the fs7 back is a donkey and if you want TC or raw the 5 is a must have

the market for the latter work style is smaller - raw, multicam, pl, hence compatatively high deflation - I don't think it is a problem (for you!) although it is worth seriously considering if the fs7 or even 5 would fit your needs better

Hi Leo,

Any chance you could forward me your friend's contact details? We're looking at picking up a second F5 for an upcoming feature. And that's too good a price to ignore!

Cheers,

Mark

I say there will be a new camera soon. Whether it will be an official "replacement" (F5 MKII) or just something that fits Sony's entirely new cinema lineup is up for a debate. F5 was announced in October, 2012 and the technological progress has not kept still over that time. Since F5's release, Sony cinema cameras fit into a fairly normal "double the price" progression - FS7 for $8,000, F5 for $16,000, F55 for $30,000 and F65 for $60,000. These days, a manufacturer can release F65 spec'ced piece for the historical price of F5. And, if not these days, then by the NAB'16.

I agree with Dennis.. those of us old farts who remember buying multiple $50,000 plus camera,s.. betasp/ digibeta etc.. the price of camera,s is now so low .. that you dont really have to worry about re sell values.. and the thing can be paid off with a couple of long shoots..

Leo.. Im surprised your friend is bothering to go for a F55 TBH.. unless its for a specific long job.. with the internal 4K upgrade, which will be included in all F5,s..( based on what I was told by a Sony guy) there is only the global shutter making any big difference..

DLD - I'm still waiting for your Canon predictions!..still no new 4K Canon DSLR!

But I would think Sony would replace them too....more resolution, better color, more DR, new features...

Yes.. selling a 5 to replace with a 55 at this point in their product life would be equal to what I begged a colleague not to do a year ago. He bought a NEW C500 at full retail to replace his C300. He just firesaled that very camera a couple weeks ago for $9K with a CD Odyssey w/RAW license included.

Hell, Im still using the 4K hack on my F5, I want to be that one guy that held out till Sony gives it/4K away for free. After the F3 s-log dog bit me.

The difference is that the F55 is being used for big-time studio motion pictures, and big-budget television shows. Value-wise the F5 whips its butt, but producers with budgets want the very best, so the F55 gets the call for the big jobs.

That said, I would have thought it would be cheaper to upgrade the F5 to a F55 via Sony, than to sell the F5 for such a low price, then cop the full hit of the F55.

Yes agree.. producers will want what they have told is the best.. and if Leo,s mate is moving into that rarefied field.. he would be way better advised to get an Amira..
The different CFA is really negligible in reality.. the F65 has a different sensor so maybe some effect.. but its such a massive color space .. bigger than film .. its a bit crazy really.. and global shutter not a big deal either.. look at all the Alexa high end being shot.. (without the mechanical shutter )

But yes I agree.. if its a big job and they want F55.. I,d buy one too..

Actually, I posted something on this today on a Canon board. 1D X MK II specs have been leaking recently and that will probably be the next body from Canon. With dual CFast slots, it should have a fairly high recording bit rate and (an alleged) 14 stop DR. Of course, at this point, a moderately updated 1D C would do the job too.

I can only imagine it will be $$$

i want to see all the cameras that are going at half price. So far I hear of one, the OP's boss who is selling his. After that, where are they?
I think there is a lot of speculation going on here and frankly not much justification for it.

Ohh, I hope so...I have been waiting for some type of 1DC upgrade for 3 years.

People are losing their mind only after 6 months for the URSA Mini 4.6K...

There is a Sony F5 on Ebay for $8700 right now. They pop up here and there.

You had me excited for a minute. This camera is NOT actually SELLING for this extremely low price.
That is just what the current bid on eBay is. (For your info, the bid on this camera is now $6,900 and
there are 5 days and 13 hours left for others to bid it up higher). If there would have been an actual
working F5 with a 'buy it now' price of $6100, I would have bought it right then and there.

Yea, I never mentioned BIN....that would have been crazy. They actually have been staying pretty low and then of course in the final minutes they rocket up by hundreds.

Of course. That's why he originally said "LOL".
