As I wait for my FS7 the only thing that really bugs me is the way Sony has locked out the use of any white balance controls when using Slog 2 or 3 with LUTs. I'm surprised it doesn't seem to bother other people more on these boards though I just got off the phone with a San Francisco rental house DIT and he said it drives them crazy and he has been complaining to Sony for ages. He also had no idea if it was a technical issue or just Sony's strange concept of how a "film" camera is supposed to function.
This thread is for people to comment on this issue- not technical snafus ,favorite settings slog2 vs 3 , or why Sony color sucks. If others agree I would like us all to contact Sony demanding a change.
Oh yeah - Warning - this is a RANT.
Just to review :
In Custom mode you have access to white balance functions including adjustable Kelvin and green-magenta shifts but no access to VF and Monitor LUTs or to baking in LUTS like 709 800% or 709Type A .
In Cine EI mode you have the LUTS and baking in abilities, but are locked out of white balance , Kelvin etc and instead only have 3 presets 3200, 4800 and 5600. Also locked out of noise reduction.
Alexa and RED both give you access to both at the same and the new Panasonic 35mm camera advertises grading in camera. You can bet the upcoming C300 upgrade won't do this either.
Why does it bother me?
1- I want to be able to show my clients something close to their final picture and especially under fluorescents or mixed light we'll be looking at green. Howcum they don't have to see that with an Alexa? Even with a RED I can dial it out. I want to be able to sell this camera not apologize.
2 - Under mixed lighting in particular its important to be able to gel your lights to work with the prevailing hue - especially in a fluorescent room. Even mixing brands of LED's ,Flo's or using HMI's is tricky. You need a monitor to be able to do that right. So you need a LUT.
3 - I go off the preset color balances often to adjust to windows, exteriors under cloud or blue skylight, or whenever I might want a warm or cool look. That's why I get hired, because I have a sensitive eye.
I give that up entirely without a LUT and pray that someone in Post will be a mind reader. But most clients using sub $10K cameras don't pay for skilled color correction. Its usually the editor and that's often the client. Most of them don't have a clue about color !
4 - The baked in LUT ability of the camera could be a goldmine as far as clients wanting beautiful take home 709 images . It could be that C300 killer we all want. But that's terribly hobbled if I can't dial in decent color.
4- If I opt for CUSTOM mode for the white balance, not only don't I have a Monitor LUT for lighting and clients, but I am locked out of using the VF-LUT as a tool for proper exposure of Slog. Allister Chapman has a good argument for the VF LUT using zebras as the best way to easily control exposure in Slog.
5 - Even if I''m not baking in the LUT, the metadata allows POST to start with my look.
Don't tell me I'm free to use Hypergammas or 709 with color control, I want this camera for the SLog3 look. That's what I'm selling . Don't tell me its designed for RAW - because most people aren't shooting RAW, and anyway its a LUT its not baked in.
No one has expressed a good technical reason for why Sony has done this. If you can switch between 3200, 4800 and 5600 in CINE EI i imagine you to be able to go to variable Kelvins & throw in a little Green-Magenta correction as well.
I don't know if it would be better for Sony to unlock the LUT's in CUSTOM or Unlock white balance in CINE EI but please do one or the other. I can understand that messing with the contrast and black levels could screw up the LUT, but not minor color correction.
Color Routes for post and in camera seems to me to still be the missing link in Sony's Slog system. Let's encourage them to step up to the plate. (Currently I'm thinking of buying a bunch of filters to add warmth, cooling and magenta offset, but its annoying to have to do so.)
