F3 Footage - Jason Wingrove Australia

Everts I moved this from the other thread as the OP in that thread has been so kind as to provide all the details etc of shooting set up and commentary.

Ive sent the creator of that clip an invite to the forum to see if he can impart some of his experience with the f3 with us.

Great Noel, yeah I should have started a new thread in the first place.

This clip blows me away ....the editing is spot on aswell . Hope to see the full version.

there is something really special about the footage out of this camera. even with the overly compressed xdcam footage, to the other short with the 10 bit 422 SR... the rendition of color, skin tones, highlight roll off, sharpness and where it resolves detail is really really nice. I really can't see productions using a genesis or f35 anymore at all with this guy, unless they desperately need a CCD camera.

Hey guys Jason here, thx for the comments :) i was really keen to test the camera having tried to dig up anything i could find at NAB this year. good to finally get my hands on it, an interesting camera indeed

cheers
jason

This footage has caught my eye the most from the "large sensor" cameras recently being talked about. Great job and great images.

Jason, greatly appreciate you stopping by.

Wonder if you could give us some information as to how you recorded etc. Was it straight SxS cards? Or to an external etc?

Cheers

Noel

Although we did some tests out to an early cinedeck all the ftg in the cut was to SxS. Obviously most is even 720P being overcranked. The 100% to camera being 1080P. Straight into FCP, some magic bullet then out. Important to know I'm not a dvx/Ex3 guy, I'm from a film background now mostly using red or 35mm. I also own a full 5D kit which I've used on much that's on my vimeo channels

Initial thoughts are that the camera is very much an ex3 in terms of construction, light as light but with that comes a little flex. To look at the camera it seems more solid or alloy in construction but if your at all familiar with the ex cams that's the build your getting.

And the stunning promotional shorts keep rolling in...

Whoever is the head of the marketing/internet buzz department deserves an Emmy.... this is the most impressive launch I've thus seen...

I know it's a bit of a bold statment... but, in general... from the footage I've seen so far the F3 seems almost more of an Alexa killer rather than a af100 killer : ))

Again, it's not in competition with the AF100, it's in competition with the Red One.

Sony arent after the Red.. really. they saw people using EX3's / 1's with DOF adapters and thought they could improve on that.. they did. Red does raw, high DR, 5K, 120fps fiddly workflow cinema imagery. this is designed for another market. indy film, realuty tv, shorts etc. Every camera doesnt always have to be another cameras killer im sure :)

Clearly, the F3 isn't a digital cinema camera like the Red One, I'm sure Sony is planning on having something more pricey that they want to sell you.

Hi, the cinedeck is still in final pre prod form, the unit we had was functioning but not final software, firstly the whole cinedeck weighs way more than the F3 itself :) the cinedeck is a VERY robust and heavy solid block of metal thing, even on an alexa i think it would dominate :) its not really a practical package to mount it on the camera even tho the f3 has 1/4" bolts on it. we did some testing that we're still working our way through the results but at this stage for any kind of on board recorder it would need to be more compact like a ninja (if they ever start making them) or a nanoflash or the just announced Sony SR solid state recorder.

havent seen it projected, when i do the live events in syd, melb and NZ soon ill get to see (gulp) :) stuff always looks pretty good projected really.. if you can sit as close as you would to the screen .. to an HD tv and not see any issue then i guess your unlikely to see them when projected either.. but we will see!

When I asked them about it at IBC, they said that their competition was the Red One. That's why it has dual-link HD-SDI and sLog and a PL mount option.

Whether people think the featuresets line up or not is one thing, but their intention was to price it affordably as compared to the Red One, and to offer a Sony alternative to that market.
