F3 arrived? Post it up here!

My F3 arrived a couple of weeks ago. I added a MovietubeCR system for easier tripod to handheld use.

Not shown is the VF assembly with a Zacuto VF...I was still sorting that out. Mattebox pieces and handles should arrive end of this week. I plan on doing a full review of the Movietube system soon.

Current Config:

MovietubeCR w/VF option, 15 and 19mm rods, quick release
DigiOptical 18-50 zoom
Anton Bauer battery Plate
Lectrosonic 2 channel wireless
Nanoflash
Berkey top plate with extension
Zacuto VF, FF and quick release arm
Birns and Sawyer Arri rosette for handles
Shape WLB Double quick handles

Here's a couple of crappy iphone pics of the rig on it's maiden shoot Monday.

How do you like the DigiOptic 18-50mm?

It's a nice enough lens, plenty sharp, just fast enough but mechanically so so...I use it more like a variable prime if there is such a thing. Also it's a little too compact...with the VF out there and follow focus on, there isn't much "real estate" left for the fingers. I'm always grabbing the iris when I think I have the zoom or the focus when I want the zoom. I wish I could mount a zoom stick on it.

I really need something with more reach...I'm weighing my options for it's replacement or companion.

I read that this lens is the same as the Sigma 18-50mm. If this is so short and you have problem zooming, wouldn't it better to get the used Sigma for $3,500 less?

Good point. I didn't know that Sigma didn't have an aperture ring. (I assume that is what you are saying)
I was thinking of getting the RED 18-85mm until I found out that the Sony lenses work with camera to correct color aberration (I think that is the term)
I'll work with my Nikon lenses for the other lengths until Sony comes out with zooms or I get real PLs.

The basic system. O Box still back ordered. Only frustration so far is diopter on Z Finder. I may need to add some spacing plates. Glass is Red 18-50. So far have Sigma 50-150 Nikon. Lomo 37-140 enroute. Will be adding more Nikon glass.

F3 Run and Gun Set-up

F3 Run and Gun Set-up

Here is my new rig for run and gun documentary shooting. We have some Zeiss CP.2's to cover our longer focal lengths, but are using the LWZ.2 for hand-held work. Kit includes, S-logged F3, AJA Ki Pro Mini, Shape BP6000 baseplate and handles, Zeiss LWZ.2 15.5-45, Anton Bauer batts, Zacuto EVF and Chrosziel matte box and follow focus.

Is this Gabe?
That's a nice setup with a seriously heavy battery....how's the balance? Also, how do you like the Shape baseplate and shoulder pad....is it comfy?

DUDE!

How awesome is the Cine30 HD?

Hey there John, it is Gabe. Found this board after buying the F3. Some good discussions here.

As far as I could tell the Shape was the only baseplate I could find (two months ago when I was shopping) that went straight to the sony plate without having to add, remove or adjust any parts. It also only raises the camera an inch or two so the center of gravity stays low. With the battery on the back for balance, it winds up feeling a lot like my ENG cameras on my shoulder.

My only complaint so far is that the pad often conflicts with the V-lock in the front or the locking pin in the back of the plate. It seems making the pad a bit shorter would fix that relatively minor issue. The pad also is attached by velcro, so it is easily removed. If I am transitioning from my shoulder to the tripod frequently during a shoot, I usually just leave the pad off.

Cine30 HD is pretty nice. Used a Video 18 for many years, and I wish I'd upgraded sooner. Long lens and high wind - no shake. Also love the travel on the camera plate (a big change from the smaller Sachtler heads). Now that I am using primes and zooms, rebalancing after a lens change is a snap.
