GH2 Extreme Aliasing and Moire in GH2 Camera Playback

so i know i already posted this in a thread but i thought id ask here..

i just spent two months waiting for my gh2. got here last week. now im finding an UNUSABLE amount of aliasing and moire in pretty much every shot. HOWEVER, when i import the footage on my mac everything is fine. The problem only shows up during recording and playback on the actual camera (hope im being clear). definitely a defect in the screen and im not really sure whether i should send it back or not.. not sure if its worth waiting another month to get it back. anyone got any ideas?

So what's the issue? Footage is fine. Aliasing on the LCD screen doesn't matter. That helps a lot in focusing while shooting.

helps when looking for focus. doesnt help when looking for aliasing/moire. also looks like crap and not great for trying to focus on the material one is producing..

I would say just the opposite. The screen, due to its lower resolution, is showing moire since down-sampling from the original footage is probably executed by the nearest neighbour method. So, nothing problematic, maybe just a little annoying... :)

However, it can have some positive sides. Namely, if the footage is not in focus and is slightly blurred, then the original footage is already "filtered" and when downsampling, by using the nearest neighbour method, you cannot get moire effect. So, if moire appears on some subjects on your screen it means that those subjects are properly focused. More moire - better focus. Voila! :)

I just ignore the moire. The LCD will always show it. Just take a peak on the EVF and you'll a nice clean image. I don't pay attention to most of the aliasing either, since it's not in the final product or is very negligible. Basically no point returning it if you do some tests and realize the artifacts don't show up in the final image. or hook up a monitor if you want a better representation.

thanks to both :). when i said "focus" on the material i meant concentrate on the material being produced. but i see your point. i guess ill stick with it for now. i bought a square trade warranty, so eventually when the gh2 goes up in availability ill probably end up sending it in.

If the playback of the camera files through a hdv tv are fine the camera and files are ok,it is beyond me how the raw files could be bad but fine after being imported.

Not to harp on the topic, but send it in for what? The camera is designed and built as it is. There is nothing broken or anything they need to repair. It is what it is. From all the footage I have shot, lots of fabrics, textures, I have yet to see any moire or aliasing in footage. So there is just no issue here.

Enjoy the camera and create some work.

Good information here. I just got my gh2 and was noticing aliasing/moire on fine detail and was wondering if it was actually there or just camera playback.

Any playback monitor that displays less than the NATIVE resolution of the video file may display moire/aliasing.

It's the same for every camera out there.

...The cure is to always evaluate your footage with a full resolution monitor, which is usually not possible because of the size and cost of a full resolution monitor.
