Can an external 5 or 7 IN monitor be connected to the 7D?
If so, which is the best option?

Thanks for your comments.

There are many many threads right now on monitoring options, but that also means it's very difficult to sort through and find the info you need, so im on the same hunt as you man.

Basically we need either a component or hdmi monitor tha will be good for critical focus and give us a better idea of image exposure and color than the camera LCD. That is all i need ;)

Any suggestions?

SMall HD, im sold. Bundle looks amazing.

Anyone have any negative things to say about the SmallHD DP1? If not, i think ill pick one up this afternoon.

hmm. now im wondering if it might be too large for the rig..

What's the best way to hook this up to rails?

I have personally used the ikan v5600 5.6" LCD monitor on my Canon 7D and can say from experience that I wouldn't want, or need anything larger on the top of the camera. The larger the monitor (and battery) the higher the center of gravity, which in turn makes shooting handheld very difficult.

The ikan v5600 has a Toshiba panel, HDMI and 600 lines of vertical resolution which is plenty in a monitor that size. You'll also get more battery life in a smaller monitor from the same power options.

I noticed the ikan has a usb connector for the video input. Does that also provide component or just hdmi?

keith,

im curious to know how you find both the accuracy of both color and light on the ikan screen.

Is there any way to calibrate this monitor? With a 200:1 contrast ratio, i wonder if it has enough picture inforfmation to deliver an accurate image?

What is the advantage of the DP1, when for ~$100 more you can get the Marshall, which has exposure and focusing aids?

this won't work if you need the monitor on your rig, but keep in mind that you can use a laptop as a monitor.
i was thinking about maybe getting a little dolly cart and putting my laptop on it... not sure yet

Something I'm dying to know, but don't have the ability to test, is if the HDMI and the composite output will work simultaneously? I suspect not, but if someone could confirm, that would be awesome.

for when just using a tripod and camera is stationary, anyone hookup a regular 20" or so computer monitor ?

Does the cameras LCD stay on to?

We have several situations where we want the director/ fist AD, script supervisor etc.. to be able to see whats going on. For this reason we often use old Canon XL2's with a honking 40 lbs sony 19" monitor CRT to do this, but id much rather use my 7D if we could come up with an acceptable setup.

I prefer the Marshall over all of them, the ikan I used (granted it was the larger one) had a weird angle of view issue and I have heard mixed reviews about the SmallHD. I like the marshall because of its features like peaking and false colors, and as per mounting it, if i want to keep it compact, i use this: http://store.redrockmicro.com/s.nl/it.A/id.1573/.f
with a top handle for low mode

Note: Also, at the birns and sawyer DSLR get together, Marshall had a raw version of their HDMI monitors that don't have peaking false colors or anything really, but it's said to be pretty inexpensive
