external disk won't play P2 shots in import window

I shot some footage last week that is behaving a litttle weirdly on my Mac

It was shot HVX200 on 2 @16 G P2 cards: 720/24PN

One card was 14G the other 9G each having many shots on them. Typical day's shooting.

I downloaded the footage onto an external drive via FW400 to a 7200 RPM OWC drive I have used many times before. I opened FCP 5.1.2 on my laptop to check the footage in the P2 import window.

I saw the footage but none of the files would play.

I checked that my FCP sequence and capture settings were also 720 24P.

I then put the original P2 cards in the laptop and FCP would play those fine. Only the files that had been copied to the external drive would not play.

I tried importing one shot from the external disk and it seemed to import fine.

What's going on here? Why won't the files on the external disk play?

I don't recall ever having this problem before.

(I have another question about this but I'll make that another thread later as i need to go out now.)

Were the cards write protected when you transfered them? Also always repair permissions and try trashing prefs if you haven't already.

You also might have to try converting them in an external program like P2 Log Pro or HDLog.

I always write protect cards.

I should try repairing preferences and repairing permissions - good idea.
I haven't done anything like that yet. I'm just wondering if anyone has seen something like this.

Yeah! Thanks Barry - I just looked up at the sticky
"P2 workflow troubleshooting"

It seems tyhat I had labeled my folders "P2 card #1" #2 etc.

The whole problem was I used a "#" sign. Removed it & the importer worked fine.
Wow is that bizarre or what?

It's been reported several times before; FCP just doesn't like those special characters in the name. Glad that thread helped you quickly though!

Saved Me Barry Thanks -for the hundredth time.
Hey here's another question for you.

I tried to simply move the "contents folder " and the "last text" file together into a different folder and instead of simply moving the files, the finder started duplicating both as if I were copying them onto a different disk.

If I moved the same folder and file while they were inside another folder they would move just fine.
If I unlocked the "last text file" then they would also copy fine -

What is this about?
