Express Card Adapter Release

I just got an email from Duel Systems explaining that their express card adapter will ship in about 30 days. They are actually taking orders.

Any thoughts from some of you beta testers on how well this thing works?
I'm just excited with the prospect of not having to lug around a second old Powerbook....

I have the Duel System’s DuelAdapter on order, given a pre-release price of $99.00 (retail $119.00). An acknowledgement email from Duel Systems says the product will ship in 3-4 weeks.

My understanding is that this adaptor will allow me to transfer data into my Dell laptop’s hard drive. Here is my question:

Will I also be able to transfer that data to an external hard drive hooked up to the Dell laptop? Or, must it go only to the internal drive?

Sorry, if this is an ignorant question, but that is just what I am in this area of expertise.

Thanks,

Michael Erlewine.

I would think there would be no restrictions. Just use your computer as a pass through to the external drive.

Second that,

would be very surprised if there is any limitation....i dont know the adapter, but technicly it will work like a PCMCI-slo II afterwards, so there wount be a difference if you copy it to your internal HDD, external HDD, or if you just watch/edit the footage....lets hope it comes out and works nice, i am planning to get a new Laptop this year, so maybe i go with thedevil and change to macbook pro, or a PC with expresscard only (no PCMCIA) at least...!

Anyone who can give some official/semi official (beta tester..?) information?

I am from good old europe, id be curious to know if there is a distribution here...!?

Transfer times on a Macbook Pro running Windows (under bootcammp) and using the Duel Adapter are horrific! I suspect it has nothing to do with the drivers from Duel, but rather poor expresscard drivers from Apple.

I don't believe Apple supplies any EC/34 drivers for Windows XP running Bootcamp.

Why would it?

I think they do. I tried the adapter on a friend's Asus laptop (I think) where the transfer speeds were fenomenal.

According to what I've read on their site the current drivers work fine with OSX. It's just that once you've mounted and ejected the DuelAdapter (not a P2 card into the adapter) you cannot re-mount it again without re-starting the computer.

Notice to Customers Running Mac OS X: Due to a peripherals management limitation in Mac OS X, your MacBook Pro or other Apple computer must be restarted before reinserting the DuelAdapter into the ExpressCard card slot on your computer. We are actively working with Apple and expect to have this situation corrected in a future Mac OS X release. Please check the Drivers page on this web site for updates.
