Experience with external recorders?

I saw a video somewhere saying the Zacuto EVF is not HD on the pass-through so the guy was using a SmallHD splitter coming out of the AF and going to the EVF and the other to the Ninja. Don't know if that's true or not about the ZEVF.

Interesting. Just read this on Zacutos site:

Q: Why doesn't the EVF work with my Ninja?
A: Currently, the EVF pass through is only 1080i. We are working on making the pass through work with the Ninja but it will be 1080i and not 1080p. The only solution for the 1080p is to get a splitter before the EVF that can do 1080p and then go to each individually.

What I don't understand is that HDMI is always interlaced anyway?

As far as I know, the SmallHD splitter is still a current product. Several customers are using it and report that it works well with the Ninja.

Yes it's current and it works; I have one. The latest EVF firmware also allows the EVF to loop through to the Ninja and it works fine. I've tested it with the FS100.

Matt - Is that Berkey Systems 15mm mount specific to the plate or is it a universal item you adapted? On the Berkey site and can't quite find it. Thanks!

Hi Guys

I'm looking at buying the Samurai as I shoot wedding vids as well as short films and need some resiliiance. I've just recently bought the AF100 and am looking at buying the SmallHD DP6 and was wondering how these 2 would hook up on the same camera? Would it be OK to run the Samurai on HDSDI and the DP6 on HDMI? Would I lose anything by doing this or would I be best using the sdi passthrough and would I get any sort of prolonged lag?

Many thanks

Terry

Yup. Should be fine to do it that way.

Yes, it would be fine that way. Don't forget, though, that the Samurai has a 480x800 SMPTE-standard screen and will have a growing number of viewfinder-type facilities released over the next few months. BTW - if you do decide to use the Samurai's HD-SDI loop-through, you'll find that it has a zero delay.

Hi I've been doing some research and considering purchasing an atmos samurai for my weddings/film work. This might be a stupid question but I edit in adobe premiere cs 5.5 on my laptop, would there be any benefit in that case to using the samurais apple pro res codec? Can it be dropped straight into the timeline or does it need converting? (And if so does this effect the initial better image quality and thus make it pointless?) Thanks

Yeah, you can drop them straight into the PP 5.5 timeline and actually save some time. (no need to convert anything) The 4:2:2 color space is just awesome when you grade your footage. Also, with the new firmware you can actually start using the monitor as well. (with peaking, false color, zebras etc)

Just buy it!

If I would go with the Samurai are there some SDI to HDMI adapters?

But the SDi looks so much better. Particularly from the AF100 .. plus you have the
SDI bit-wise start/stop signals to synchronize footage with the internal card ( or
other extenal recorders).

HDMI is a millstone as far as I'm concerned... that's why we didn't get a Ninja .. you're spending
a lot of money to externally record an image that looks markedly worse than what the AF100
SDHC cards can record internally. So what's the point?

For a 5DMKII .. sure .. but not the AF100.

Ps: I kind of like the way Barry netted it out on the AF100 video while pointing between the HDMI and
SDI outputs of the camera ... "Bad (HDMI) / Good (HD-SDI)" Simple but right-on.

For clarification the HDMI video signal should be identical to the HD-SDI video signal. The difference is in the reliability and security of the interface, plus the 1080/24PsF, timecode, and record start/stop triggering, all of which apply to SDI but not to HDMI.
