Expanded Focus

From what I understand there will be no problem with focusing on the RedOne. But on the Sony FX-1 there is a very feature called expanded focus. If you shoot 4K then a 720p focus screen is good, but if you could have a portion of the 4K image at native res on a 720p screen that would be even easier to focus with. Just an idea.

we´ve got teased over and over by graeme who made hints about a "magic focus assist" and it didn´t sound like it´s going to be something like a native rez thing

The focus assist function will probably sample the 4k image for better focus. I could be totally wrong, but it makes sense to me.

Is it something like....the bubble girl appears on screen and gives you a thumbs up when you are in focus ?

Ha ha. Perhaps a tractor-beam / taser mounted mounted near the lens that holds the subject in the correct focal plane. Maybe that's what the big red dot is for.

I was going to guess some sort of edge enhancement algorithm to display sharp edges, but that doesn't make sense because I thought the JVC did somethign like that.

So maybe it does full blown 'sharpness" detection and color codes it. Green is in Focus, Red is out of focus, and everything in between. It wouldn't work on a white wall, but if there was sufficiently fine detail, it should be able to look at the frequency of the detail over an area and be able to tell pretty well if its in focus. Again, this wouldn't work if there was... say a forest miles and miles away, which would be high frequency even out of focus, but that wouldn't be a problem, because then you'd just have two focus regions.

Hmmmm....clinical psychiatrists have recently determined that seeing magic focus fairies is definitely a symptom of a diet consisting of a combination of too much whiskey and coffee.

I'd say more of the former.

As the operator gets closer to sharp focus, the camera has an audible beep that gets louder and louder.

No, but on a more serious note, are you (Red) using one of my suggestions from this other board's thread (see below)? I especially had high hopes for the contrast display as a means of showing focus info. BTW, if you guys did find use for some of those ideas, how about sending me a free EVF as thanks? Or even better, a free RedOne!

Whatever the focus assist does, you should definately give it the official name "magic focus pixies™"

Cheers,
