FEATURE: Exit 101 - beginner filmmaking journey

The Blog has been updated with the Official Cast Announcement. We begin principal photography on Feb. 5th.

Blog has been updated. We did a table read with the 6 lead roles yesterday and did some screentests with all our newly aquired gear. I'm glad we did this now, and not on set.. because TECHNICAL difficulties did arise. Such as not getting any audio signal from the mic into the recorder we were using. We also had to work around the weather as it was misting outside, so we literally had to change our entire plan for the test shots on the spot. But all in all it went very well and I am very pleased with the cast, the chemistry is there, and to end the night we had an extremely nice italian dinner at the directors house and just generally had a great time! Can't wait to start filming in 2 weeks!

Blog updated with background info and pictures of some of the cast. More to come soon. We begin principal photography this coming weekend! I can't wait.

Shooting a full feature seems very ambitious for someone with no filmmaking experience at all. Just curious, why not start with a 1-weekend short film shoot to learn the process and assure (ok, almost assure) that your cast and crew will finish the job? I've produced 4 shorts in the last 3 years, and learned a ton along the way. Certainly glad we started like that. Feature film and lots of confidence (as well as dedicated people) now coming soon.

At any rate, I wish you the best of luck!

Ahh, I have experience on film sets. Its tough to say what my position is.. I'm not directing.. more or less producing and acting in the film. I also wrote the screenplay. I have hired people who have experience to do the dirty work!

We had our first day of principal photography yesterday, and it was off to a rocky start to begin with. My DP had to pull an all nighter the previous night, which caused us to have to push back our start time a good 6 hrs, and in doing this that caused me to have to reschedule my crew. Which was fine, as everyone was free the entire day anyway.. and were troopers about it. However, the location we were shooting at wasn't available during that time.. (found out later it probably wouldn't have been available at all.) So, I was frantic for a bit trying to figure out a plan C.. because that was our plan B.. lol. I finally was able to find an alternate location for the same stuff we originally intended to shoot that was actually BETTER than the original location.. hooray! However, one of the crew members had been hanging out all day with family waiting on the "call". When he finally got the call.. he said he was feeling a bit under the weather so he wouldn't be able to make it. No worries. We had the DP, and a very small crew there including hair/makeup (who did an amazing job, and was a trooper the entire night/morning).

It took us a few hours to get the camera and lights set up just right, (this is why we didn't do a complicated scene with alot of actors first) and because this was the first time using some of the gear we had (follow focus, 35mm adapter) it took some prepping to get it just right. I didn't get to see the footage we shot.. but from all accounts from the DP and crew.. it looked great.. so mission accomplished!

Day 1 complete, with only minor annoyances!

What sound equipment you end up using? Please make sure to double system just for safety. (if possible-sound into camera and backup recorder)

I see you guys are using the Tascam US-122. I remember that audio interface. Nice pics. Are you using Cubase or what recording program to record into?

Yeah, we were just going straight into the camera.. but for some reason my beachtek adapter is malfunctioning, so it was the best work around we could find. It worked pretty well. The only issue we had with it was it being cold for the night shoots outdoors so we had to set everything up inside the front seat of a vehicle to keep it somewhat out of the elements. We used garageband to record into.

Some more photos! and some Behind the scenes videos. Footage to come soon!
