FEATURE: Exit 101 - beginner filmmaking journey

Here's a "practice" edit. (I'm no editor, and this is my first attempt at editing anything other than still images and home video clips). I'm not editing the real film, but I wanted to practice and learn about it. The music and such is also just placeholders, and won't be in the final edit. The audio is 2 sources, some is H4N recorded and some is camera audio. See if you can tell which is which. It is unedited other than volume tweaks. Again, this is merely for practice.

BTW, I left a post in your thread about getting a name actor in the "Acting" thread.

The guitar song and guitar player are bit out of "sync"... which I mean I can see he plays something different..hands move slower etc...

But further it looks good.

Thanks guys. Yeah the music is just place holder stuff for now, the guy is actually playing something there (unplanned) but we didn't record it (unplanned). But, I will either get him to play it, or have a professional banjo player watch the video and come up with something that matches his hands. There's a few things I don't like about it that I intend to fix.

We've been hard at it. Currently on day 10. We had a few off weekends due to my DP being out of town on a job. He's back now and won't be gone anymore for the duration. So we are really planning on hitting it hard the next few weeks. I'm hoping to be wrapped by the end of June. Here's some Behind the Scenes Photos from this past weekend, with a cool dolly shot we did.

it looks like those kinds of scenes which always have those barking dogs, or cats. With some cheerps, crickets...an owl...

Pretty good Azmyth - make sure you watch your audio levels. If you don't have a audio program, you can try to adjust them in Final Cut / Premiere or whatever. I think according to all I've read (I'm no pro audio mix guy) the vocal levels should be between -9 and -15 for the most part. And keep the music score below that. It makes it easier for us to hear everything. But looks pretty cool. One up for Georgia! Woohoo

Thanks!

I spend an entire day trying to get the audio levels right. Thats one of the most frustrating things to do. I had everything in between -6 and -12. I was doing it in Vegas, but I probably should have been using Sound Forge.

Few more BTS shots to share. This was from this past weekend. We didn't have our O-mazing photographer on set because his dad passed away during the week, these were taken by my wife on her blackberry. We did have someone taking photos, but I don't have them in hand yet!

Our EMT's were practicing loading up our body double. She had to lay under a sheet the entire time.

Last nights shoot was the most hectic day ever. Everything that could go wrong did..
The night before, one of my actors called in sick. She confirmed she wasn't coming the next morning so I had to rework the schedule to shoot around her. Then, the location we were using called and said they had a water line bust and they were going to be tied up repairing that all day and it was a mess, so they didn't want us to be there that day. So I pulled some strings and found us another location to shoot at. It took almost all day to notify everyone of the change, including extras/cast and crew. By the time we were all meeting up, the weather got bad.. and our 2nd location was outside. So, we had to find a 3rd location. Luckily one of our crew members had a large covered area at his house that he said we could use. So, we spent the next half hour all on our phones calling everyone we could to tell them not to go to the 2nd location. Finally we had everyone and did a 15 car caravan to the 3rd location 10 minutes away. By the time we got there, the rain had nearly stopped but the area was perfect for what we wanted to shoot. The only issue we had was that this location was not controlled (by us) and we had to deal with alot of random people. Which in itself wasn't bad, but I just don't like having anyone on set who is not either the location owner, or US. People were calling their friends and saying "Hey, come over here.. they are shooting a movie over here.. OMG!!!". And, yeah.. thats how it happens. Anyway, we did wind up getting all the shots we needed.. and here are some set photos.

I have a feeling that a lot of clean up, ADR and foley will be needed.

All those shouting people "hééy, yooohooo, hééé I'm on TV....."
:kali: -> Only solution

Nah, they were surprisingly very quiet when we said "QUIET ON SET!"

Audio was not an issue at all.
