EX1 discontinued???

Weird... I went to order the EX1 at B&H this evening and it says the EX1 is discontinued. The EX3 is still available. I check other popular EX1 sites and other people are reporting the same thing... The EX1 popularity is just picking up steam... or so I thought...

Wow that was fast I think the camera's only been out for two years. Always wanted one. I don't know maybe there going to reveal something great. Hope the price is a little lower than the EX1.

I have heard rumor-speaks of new Sony product being announced tomorrow. We shall see.

Really?
Interesting - I wonder what they're planning on changing exactly...
It's kind of interesting given that the EX1 is essentially the EX3 without the interchangable lens (and a few other bells and whistles).

If the EX3 is still going to be an active product, doesn't seem like they would just totally scrap the EX1 for something completely new and different.

the ex5 perhaps ..... , I have a few colleagues here that went with the ex1 , they just bought a few actually ,as I went with the HMC 150.
I did asked them to wait a little and now this ...

Don't want to quote my source but supposedly an EX1R is coming out in a couple of months with relatively minor changes (buttons and ergonomics - the way the camera is held) but no mention of new sensors (like the Exmor backlit sensors). Seems hard to believe they would stop sales of a popular camera just to make minor changes.

Oops - Guess this is old news but it looks like it is really happening: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=184328

A sales rep for a UK-based retailer told me (a few weeks ago) that a new EX1 was coming soon. He wouldn't/ couldn't divulge details but implied that it would have a 50Mb/s recording option.

My guess is that it will be revision rather than a new model. It would be strange, however, if the EX1 is updated/improved and not the EX3.

This is one of the better kept secrets by Sony.
50MB/s option, I didn't hear about that part, that would be awesome. I know It's going to be a revision, and if the details I got from Sony is correct, previous EX1 owners are going to have access to it too. We'll find out tomorrow.

Concerning "previous EX1 owners" are we talking major firmware upgrade? Tradeup program?

I'm not really allowed to post it until the info is released by Sony. Honestly, I'm not sure neither. But I don't think it's a trade-up program. The EX1 is only 2 Years old.

Whatever the case, I find it a strange business practice to discontinue a previous model before releasing a successor model. Just release the modified version like Canon did with the XH-A1, and discount the "old" one.

Apple does it all the time. Other video manufacturers do it. They discontinue production of the old model, trying to time the introduction of the new so that they can slipstream the new one in when supplies of the old one dry up.

Why would they want to go taking a big ol' loss on the prior models? Let the supply dry up, then launch the replacement. It's how everyone does it.

But it seems to have already dried up, haven't it? At least in B&H. Sure, there are other sellers, but what if one wanted to buy specifically from B&H? Now one has to wait for a replacement model. Instead of waiting one might simply choose a different brand. The decision is between saving some money now or losing client base.

This was an error on our part for which we apologize. Apparently our buyer wished to note on our site that the EX1 is backordered and that we have no ETA. Again, we regret and apologize for this error and any confusion it caused.

I have a buddy who says, "I may not know, but I'm willing to speculate". Well... glad we got this all straighten out! Go back to your homes people... nothing to see here...
