C200: Event I shot in C200 Canon Raw Light

nice example of what the camera can deliver in ambient mixed light.

How did the workflow work out for you?
how much captured data/conversion time? /editing workflow

The workflow was pretty straight forward, straight into Canon Raw app then out to prores 4444, shot around 2X 256gb cards and half a 128gb an it was transcoded in a few hours ready to cut in FCPX, I have the mac pro 64gb trashcan and seem pretty flawless so far.

Wow, love your shooting and the editing, did you edit as well? The grade I am not so crazy about, it has a washed out, mid-range image that looks flat and soft to me. Personally, I like a little sharper, more contrast and more saturated colors. But I'm not your client and I am sure your client liked the piece. Nice work.

Cheers, yes, I edited and am guilty of the grading, I guess I just haven't quite fallen for that punchy, saturated look that seems to be popular, I've always tried to tone down and keep the grade subtle, raised blacks, less sat etc but I hear where you're coming from and right now, I'm trying out different methods with Resolve etc to get more of a stronger punchier grade on future projects.

Thanks for sharing. I think the feel of the grade fits the sort of old-timey approach of the event. How do you like using the camera? Do you think the 4k is totally needed?

To be honest, I do not think the footage had a huge resolution look. Sort of looked like normal 1080p material imho. This is not a bad thing at all, I just thought 4k60 would bring more of an influence.

Great work, I love your shooting style and the edit! What lenses did you use and how did DPAF work for while you were shooting?

Do you mind sharing a bit more info about your Mac Pro? What are the CPU and GPU specs and did you happen to notice what the CPU utilization was during the transcode? Did you do the final grade in Resolve or in FCPX?

Thanks for sharing!

Beautifully shot and edited! Well done. The more I see from this camera, the more I like it. I don't see any trace of harsh digital video here, just nice, smooth cinema.

To what gamma did you convert the raw files to? Canon log2? What editing systems support canon raw so far?

For this one I shot mostly in 4K 60p but delivered in 2K and I used the promist filter on a handful of shots which probably softened the look somewhat.

Too be honest In general It doesn't really give you the look of a RED it's just a different look altogether.

No I have had the camera for awhile and alongside the C300mkii I'm not sure it's a big step up in image over the C300 MKII after transcode and grade etc.

It's definitely sharper without a doubt and you get more flexibility in post but the C300 MKII also has something special about the look-feel and aesthetic of the image, it sort of feels like a larger more cinematic image but it is early days yet and I'm yet to try it natively in Resolve.

Overall it's going to be interesting to see how it fairs long term and how raw light develops with NLE editors etc

I have a mac pro late 2013 with 64gb, I didn't notice the CPU usage while transcoding but honestly, it didn't feel like much time at all, since i was editing, I didn't hit any walls or feel like it was slowing my workflow down.

I used a combination of L lenses, like the 24mm, 100mm and for wider shots the Sigma 18-35, the DPAF was awesome when you know how it works, sometimes in dark areas it can be a bit fiddly but mostly a revelation to use and quite addictive especially for events where you are capturing moments on the fly as they happen.

Regarding lenses though, I am not so attached to the Canon L even though they are perfect for the DPAF, I would like to try out some of the Zeiss Milvus or go back to Sigma Arts for the primes as i fell they have a more interesting look etc.

The final grade was in FCPX with combination of Film convert and Color Finale

Clog 3 so far.

Only Resolve supports the raw files natively but with limited control

The best way is to tweak, fix exposure and white balance in the Canon raw light app then transcode to prores 4444 and grade/edit in FCPX, Premeire or Resolve etc

Thanks for your reply. I would think you will learn how to get more detail (if desired) out of the footage. It is no shock that Canon stratified the camera to fit in their ecosystem. This does look like a workhorse camera. I use Edius and the new version will support the new RAW format. I am sure the other NLE's will follow suit.

Curious if you have any comment on C200, compared to C300mkII, relative to CMOS Smear (patterns in deep shadows aligned with bright highlights in the frame) and "deep" shadow noise (C300 is almost overly clean in mids and brighter tones, but can see some ugly noise in deepest shadows, often exacerbated by canon's supplied LUTs).

From the footage I've seen so far, CMOS smear (only an occasional problem with my C300II) is nonexistent on the C200. Can you Confirm? Relative to noise, the C200 seems a little noisier overall, but in a nice way, and doesn't seem to have the blocky shadow noise the C300 can occasionally see. Again, is does this line up with what you are seeing?

Yes, I have come across the Cmos smear on the C300mkii occasionally as well, mostly in the deep shadows and against bright backlit scenes/highlights, but with ABB and exposure boost I tend to get around it. I haven't noticed anything like that with the C200 so far and it was actually one of the first things I was curious about when trying out the C200 for the first time, I agree it is noisier and I expected it with raw and NR turned off but as you mention, it's not ugly noise and nothing to worry about if exposing properly.

Obviously both cameras have pros and cons and I still feel the C300 MKII has a better more aesthetically pleasing image out of the box but with the C200 you have to craft the image and work the grade a bit more.

I really liked the Cinematography, and its morning here and this made me want to drink scotch so your definitely doing something right. I am a sucker for the punchier saturated look, but this is really solid work and I'm impressed with whats coming out of the C200. I just bought a C300mkII, I think this will be my B cam/60fps work horse in the future.
