EVA1: EVA1 8/3/17 Press Release and Specifications

so, wifi-functionality is included, or does it need an extra dongle?
The spec sheet mentions that the camera has a USB Host port, for the WM50 wireless module. So I would expect the answer for the EVA1 is the same as for the DVX200, UX90, and UX180: you'd need an additional WM50 wireless module for wireless remote control functionality.

Sounds promising. Looking forward to seeing the results!

Okay, follow-up: do we know if the EVA1 employs an OLPF filter? Or is it using similar technology to the GH5?

I believe there is an OLPF, but when one is able to cram 5.7K onto a S-35 area the need for one is greatly reduced.

"EVA1 will have a remote-control app for a tablet (iOS, Android)

Wow, how did I miss that? You're right, the press release does say Android. That's good news -- previously, the remote app for Panasonic handheld camcorders was only available on the iPad, so the addition of Android is a huge bonus. Hopefully the "iOS" means it'll work on the iPhone too; the prior app wouldn't, it only worked on the iPad.

"EVA1 will have a remote-control app for a tablet (iOS, Android) that enables users to control an EVA1 when the camera is on a camera crane, or remote location." -

so, wifi-functionality is included, or does it need an extra dongle?

There is a USB 2 port on the back of the camera to plug in the wifi dongle we make. The reason we do this is to avoid tariffs in certain regions if it was built in. Others do the same.

Does it have centercrop mode and how is it implemented?

That's a great question. Expanded upon -- does it have i.Zoom? That could be enormously helpful for shooters working with a prime lens in close quarters; the ability to reframe using a sensor zoom instead of having to physically move the camera would be... glorious.

I found in specification that there will be pre rec function. Is it pre rec buffer? If I undarstand properly, how long it pre buffer 4k footage?
Second question: still grab will be full 5,7k Raw or 4k jpg image?

Not sure about how long the pre rec buffer runs. Single shot recording are individual video frames in video resolutions and codecs.

I commend you on the release. I will be purchasing one ahead of the c200 so long as we get Varicam colours - the most important feature that most people aren't even mentioning. Ugh. The numbers all seem very nice though.

I believe icarusfilm meant, is there a centercrop mode ala the GH5 ex tele feature? To act as a sort of quasi digital zoom, and still allow 24p, 36, 48p. 60p, or whatever p you want ;)

3.5" screen with a 30% drop in pixels over the GH5 3.2" screen. Not trying to be critical here, but why? The one thing needed in bundled screens is higher resolution. It seems this basically necessitates adding something like a smallHD Focus at minimum (which I have pre-ordered, so it's not the money, I just wish I didn't have to add the weight).

Re: external recorder 4k 60p 10-bit. I am interested in the "up to" 60p in 4K for the VFR functionality (36p, 48p, etc.). Can you confirm HDMI pass through will support VFR recording in up to 60p 4k 10-bit? As I understand SDI does, HDMI doesn't, but due to the 6G SDI we can only get 4K 30p 10-bit. Is there any route in which 36p/48p VFR modes can be obtained @ 4K 10-bit?

What is the maximum FPS that can be output to external recorder in 2K/Full HD mode?

Can you confirm the iOS app will work on not only tablet, but iPhone?

Base ISO of 2500 for the Dual ISO setting - how many stops past this would you consider clean ISO? The GH4 could go about 1-stop and keep it reasonably clean (400 to 800). The GH5 can go about 2 and keep it clean (400 to 800 to 1600); with 3 stops (3200) remaining fairly useable depending on the overall light scenario. Would you say the EVA-1 can get 1.5 stops (ISO 6400) and remain nearly as clean as it is at base ISO 2500?

A vendor stated earlier in this thread that the ETA would be around October. I know Panasonic's official word is Fall. Can you speak into this anymore? IE Dec 15th fall, early fall, mid fall? Does the afformentioned vendor speak the truth?

400mbps All-I in a later firmware update: This is a criticism/request/question of both the EVA-1 and GH5: I am highly interested in 400mbps, but only sort of interested in All-I. If the EVA-1 isn't gimped at all, why can we not have access to the 400mbps throughput in LongGOP mode? I would find this to be far more beneficial most of the time on both EVA-1 and GH5. All-I basically requires the extended bandwidth; with LongGOP at that throughput, we could see a perceivable benefit in image robustness and VFR modes.

You stated earlier in this thread you have limited knowledge of the EIS function. In the last EVA-1 thread, much earlier on, you said you felt people would be impressed with what Panasonic was doing with the EIS implantation in the EVA-1. Can you loop back with us and fill in some holes here? This is an area of intense interest for many of us. I'd really like to hear more in depth about the pros and cons of this specific EIS implementation, recommendations on use and non use scenarios, and what (if anything) makes the EVA-1 implementation special.

Thank you Mitch.

Looks great!

Is the 2K/120p 10 or 8-bit?
Is the regular speed 2K downsampled from full 5.7K?
How about 60p?

Thanks!!
Ed

Also would like to know+ is the body weather sealed? Can't get an answer for this from anyone.

I think it would be easier for everyone to process if we limited the number of questions per post, just for organization.

Centercrop
No centercrop & zoom modes.

3.5" screen
Specs are as they are noted on spec sheet.

VariFrame rates
Internal recording I THINK (but need to confirm) is single frame increments. Don't know for outputs, but those are certain to be spread over standard video frame rates no matter what.

2K/HD video out
60p

iOS App
phones & tablets. Android version as well.

High ISO gains
How much salt do you like in your soup? I'd say you can easily go another stop. After that is taste.

I will not comment on shipping date at this time.

400mbps usage
We have many client types from various industries. We canvas them to see what would be most beneficial, and then our engineers get to work on what is most effective. And don't forget what it would take to process in post. The offerings are based on these findings.

I will do my best to get more info on EIS.

Also would like to know+ is the body weather sealed? Can't get an answer for this from anyone.

The camera is "weather resistant." Full weather sealing is a tricky thing to state, as it brings up legal issues and IP technical ratings. There's one manufacturer who talks around this a bit and yet the camera is no better protected from the elements than ours. And I've seen that camera destroyed by moisture. Panasonic is pretty conservative about stating such things. There's a lot of ruggedness and protection built into the camera, but if you're going to shoot in the rain get a rain cover. Pretty sure Portabrace and others will make ones.
